01:13 PM ET 12.31 | As expected, new Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner did not wait long to begin their overhaul of the franchise at the management level. The Browns promptly fired both head coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert on Monday morning, joining several teams with new vacancies at those positions. Haslam and Banner met with the media on Monday morning shortly after the firing announcements were made. With two prime spots open, Haslam made it clear that the team would look for a new coach before hiring a personnel candidate to replace Heckert. Haslam told the assembled press in Cleveland that they would "begin very quickly to look for a new head coach first" and focus on the pool of GM candidates second.

Unless they already have one nailed down, picking a HC first has never proven to be a good idea.

Seemed like he had it backwards. The days of Bill Parcells like coaches are long gone. Players won't play for them.

This.
With a team CEO who has been around for a while, this seems like a novice decision.

They must have someone in mind that they want to hire as quickly as possible considering the vast number of job openings available in the league after today.

Agreed. That's stupid. To me, the GM and the head coach should be a team. They have to work together to acquire talent to fit the coach's systems and the team's needs.

It's musical chairs time again. There are more teams looking for HCs right now than there are good HCs to fill the jobs. So, if a team futzes around looking for a GM, they may find themselves with Norv Turner, or rolling the dice on some college guy.

As far as I am concerned Haslam and Banner already made their first mistake....getting rid of Heckert. After YEARS of every pick the Browns made turning to crap, including most 1st rounders, they had a GM who was making great picks. So now just because they needed to change head coaches, they firing the GM. Should have picked a head coach with the understanding that Heckert will be GM. With Heckert selecting the talent, any good coach should be able to make it work. But instead we go the usual route of "Oh, we need to rid the entire old regimen" rather than keeping the parts that worked.....big mistake. Now we HOPE they find a GM as good.
