01:19 PM ET 12.31 | The San Diego Chargers fired head coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith on Monday after the team went 7-9 and missed the postseason for the third season in a row. The news is a long time coming. Chargers president Dean Spanos issued the following statement on Monday: "I thank A.J. and Norv for the determination and integrity they brought to the Chargers each and every day. Both Norv and A.J. are consummate NFL professionals, and they understand that in this league, the bottom-line is winning. My only goal is the Super Bowl, and that is why I have decided to move in a new direction with both our head coach and general manager positions. I am committed to our great fans, and we will do whatever we possibly can to achieve that goal."

Blah, blah, blah, the owners all say the same thing, what they mean is "What have you done for me lately and don't let the door hit you in the **** on the way out."

This is true for most any profession.

Turner will get a job as an OC somewhere. Smith, not so much.

San Diego is a choice job for somebody. They won't have a problem finding a top line coach. A good GM...that's another story.

The more NFL coaches get fired, the more Jon Gruden's ego will get fed.

December 31, 2012  02:11 PM ET

The Chargers are hiring Ron Wolf to advise in the search for a new GM.

That's not a bad place to start.

Unfortunately the answer to that question was of late "Not much or less".

If he lands in Dallas, he could possibly help that offense with some much needed consistency.

They gave this guy much more of a chance than he should have been given. They should have cut him loose 2 years ago

Or in NY. He runs the offense, Rex runs the D. Of course the Jets have no offense so....

choice job? maybe for the weather. That team sucks. Until the media starts to acknowledge Phillip Rivers instead of ignoring his mediocrity and poor throwing choice...things won't change. he's like a tony romo...but worse. why does he fly under the radar EVERY SINGLE SEASON.

Here is an interesting thought. Trade Rivers to the Jets for Sanchez and a draft pick. Then, leave the D to Rex and bring in a new OC to help Rivers.

Sanchez is the David Carr of the current QB group. Don't want him.
