08:07 AM ET 01.01 | New Year's Eve quickly became a dark day for an unlucky seven NFL coaches, with firings stretching from San Diego to Philadelphia. And for fans who subscribe to the belief that Iowa's Kirk Ferentz could break a $3.7 million (or so) contract that runs through the 2019 season, here's the latest from Hawkeye athletic director Gary Barta. In an email response to three questions, here's how the university's sports boss replied: Q: Has Kirk informed you that he plans to talk to anyone about another coaching position? A: No. Q: Has anyone asked to interview him? A: No. Q: Do you anticipate Kirk being Iowa's coach next season? A: Yes. ... So much for the Ferentz to Kansas City thought. Probably.

Ferentz is currently making over $4M / year to coach @ Iowa with seven more years to go on his contract. Does anyone believe that Pioli is willing / able to make a competitive offer to a 1st time NFL head coach just coming off a 4 - 8 season that would be sufficient to attract Ferentz away from Iowa?
