08:12 AM ET 01.01 | Might a former Yankee wind up on the other side of the rivalry? According to a major league source, the Red Sox have worked out veteran Bobby Abreu in Venzezuela. As part of the workout, the team put the 38-year-old through drills at first base. It is believed the workout is part of both parties doing their due diligence, with it unclear if Abreu would even be open to playing first base, a position he hasn't manned during a 17-season major league career. ... The Red Sox have explored first base solutions throughout the offseason, looking for both everyday and backup options. The team is still attempting to come to a resolution with free agent first baseman Mike Napoli, who originally agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract on Dec. 3.

Adam Laroche makes the most sense for Boston. Give him two years guaranteed and a club/player option for the third year.

they are as bad as the Yanks

Why would you look at the ageless wonder with LaRoche still unsigned for 13.

January 1, 2013  11:02 AM ET

As far as I know, Boog Powell is still unsigned.

There is no truth to the rumor that the Sox are building an Assisted Living facilty within walking distance of Fenway Park for all the old-timers and injured talent they are bringing on to the payroll.

bobby abreu huhh?? well taking any extra measures won't hurt the team, because nobody knows if napoli would be ready by the start of the season, or if Laroche would change his mind and choose to play with boston, or if the nationals would like to trade MORSE?? all in all those are still a good options,

now,,, the player its asking a insinificant 3 years deal, its that too much to be asking from the red sox or the nationals????i mean give Laroche his lucky number 3 years contract and avoid been in any predicament during the regular season,,,,

January 1, 2013  12:12 PM ET

sometimes the teams been greedy its like a putting a stumble block in your game plans, should the red sox trade for trumbo from the halos?? or get adan lind from the toronto blue jays???

Oh boy, another sweat sox article

January 1, 2013  02:19 PM ET

well, if you think of this in strictly financial terms, suppose you can get a guy to do the job for 10% of the salary of a high-priced free agent and that guy could give you 85-90% of the production that the FA would give you it has to something to consider...

He seems to be the logical choice and that would seem to be the logical agreement.

Not bad with the bat, but i would sub him on defence late in games so he doesn't become a liability.
