08:15 AM ET 01.01 | Certainly by salary standards, Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland has made it -- to the tune of a five-year, $28.5 million contract. Although he received a big payday, Holland isn't satisfied. He wants to continue to improve. "To me, it can go many ways," Holland said. "It can be put as pressure because you have to live up to those expectations, but at the same time, it can also relax you because you are being paid." ... As spring training gets closer, Holland is healthy and is hoping to have a bounce back year. He just entering the prime of his career, and he has lofty goals for the future. "I have a lot of personal goals. I want to continue to make a name for myself and win the World series, win Cy Young and be a Hall of Famer," Holland said.

The only real chance you have in winning any of these goals is Cy young in the length of your current contract. If you stay in Arlington you have to pitch in that home run derby park, and with your career record just above 500 just keep now the Hall is not in your future.

unless holland becomes a strikeout machine, plus he should be able to pitch more than 7k innings, aside of that holland would need to win more than just 200 games, but 300 games would likely do it,,,

now from a different stand point of view, if the yankees or the jays trade for derek holland chances are 80% the player would be able to achieve his goals but it has to be a team WHO should play him more than 40 starts in the season,,,

to dream and make castles on the air its simple, things not necesary have to become reality in order to be able to achieved, i belive that holland had set his standards a little to high but then again if he improves and gets tough with himself, training hard every day, get extremely discipline in his pitching reportorie, derek holland could have a shot in the future why not???

Texas, after losing out on Greinke, letting Oswalt walk and waiting for the return of Feliz, won't be trading a pitcher any time soon.

There's no reason we couldn't trade a pitcher, as long as it's as part of a package for another, better pitcher. Assuming a rotation of Darvish, Harrison, Lewis, Ogando, and Holland, I would love to trade Holland for someone better. A package of him and Olt ought to be able to get someone reliable to shore up the rotation a bit more until (and possibly even after) Feliz gets back.
That being said, we seem like we're keeping him, and if that's so, this is the exact attitude I want him to have. Do I think he'll achieve all of those things? Absolutley not. But it's better to aim high and fall a bit short than to be mediocre.

Also, this is slightly off topic, but did they go through and wipe out everybody's comments or something? I haven't been on to comment in a long time, but I used to have WAY more than 17.

Derek, try my easy three-step HOF program:
Step 1: Become more well-known than 1980s relief pitcher Al Holland (which is who the name "Holland" in the headline first brought to mind)
Step 2: Win 300 games or 3 Cy Youngs (one ain't cutting it)
Step 3: Do it with out steroids (Seriously.)
