08:01 AM ET 01.02 | Lovie Smith is out, but Jay Cutler still has a home in the Windy City. [On Tuesday,] Cutler was being given another vote of confidence as a "franchise quarterback" in Chicago. At least for one more year. "Jay's won a lot of games," GM Phil Emery said on Tuesday. "I think the important thing is we continue to build around him. That to me is part of the equation." And as to whether Cutler is the long-term answer for the Bears, "that answer is going to come as we move forward with a new head coach," said Emery, whose fate as a general manager now rests very heavily on Cutler's success. ... "I'll say the same thing that I said this summer: I see Jay as a franchise quarterback. We've got to build around him."

At least Emery has acknowledged the offense can't get the job done as it is. Build up that O-line, and get another quality WR to compliment Brandon Marshall. That will go a long way.

If you give him an offensive line that gives him a little time he'll light it up. He also won't have that hang dog look if he's not getting hit every snap.

I think there may be a strong emphasis on drafting offensive linemen for a number of teams in April.

Why would you hitch your job's future onto a guy who's only won a single playoff game in his career, and that win came against a sub .500 team.

Six years as a starter in the NFL and his Passer Rater rankings have been 12, 16, 21, 16, 13, and now 20 this year. His 84.9 lifetime rating is WORSE than Romo (95.6), WORSE than Matt Schaub (91.9), WORSE than Donovan McNabb (85.6), WORSE than Rivers (95.5), WORSE than Carson Palmer (86.2). Cutler is positively Orton-ian in his mediocrity.

Unless, of course it is combined with "killer" ... as in "Jay Cutler is a franchise killer as a quarterback, not to mention a coach killer."

I agree. They can't find out if Jay is the guy or not until they have an O-line that can provide some consistent protection. After that, I think they need to start looking at some linebackers. Urlacher doesn't seem to have much left and they are starting to get kind of long in the tooth on the D side of the ball.

Two things that need to be addressed for Chicago's offense, play calling and their o-line. 7 of the top 15 FA's are all OL. So, if Chicago is willing to spend the money, they can fix their most glaring issue immediately. They also need to work on shortening up the pass routes for Cutler. I can't tell you how many times I watched Cutler throw deep on a 3rd and short. Take the deep route option away from him and he'll be forced to look at a 5 to 10 yd pass.

I don't get it....they fire the leader (Lovie Smith) and keep the guy that bailed on his team numerous times (Cutler)....they fire the guy that has the support of the players and keep the guy that most of the team won't even talk to unless they must...they fire the guy that gets respect and keep the joke...

he hangs on to the ball like it's his testicle...he needs to learn how to get rid of the ball. Cutler SUCKS under pressure...he'd have to go to NE to succeed because in NE, you get 10 seconds to scan the field on each passing play

If you honestly believe that, you haven't been paying attention to Bears football the past four or five seasons.

It's funny... he chooses not to throw the ball when no one is open, and he catches heat for it; he throws the ball when no one is open, and it usually ends up in an interception, and he catches heat for it.
