Joe Nedney blasts 49ers' move to hold kicking tryouts

04:53 AM ET 01.03 | David Akers started the season this year by tying the record for the longest field goal ever recorded in an NFL game. He ended it by missing two field goals among many others in the second half of the year and is now being challenged by Billy Cundiff for the starting job in San Francisco. While it makes some sort of sense that the 49ers would want peace of mind when sending their field goal kicker out in a playoff game, some have criticized the move as undermining Akers. Former and long time 49ers kicker Joe Nedney questioned the team's call to bring in other kickers for tryouts so close to a playoff game. Obviously, if Akers was making kicks, this wouldn't even be up for discussion. But the fact of the matter is more than one team has lost in the postseason, thanks to the bum foot of a kicker, from the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl to the Ravens' last season. The 49ers are just doing what they can to stay off that list, and win a Super Bowl.

He's just pissed because no one called him.

If Akers could kick worth a damn, the Niners would have won both games against the Rams and would have been 13-3 instead of 11-4-1. If he can't get it done, they need to find someone who can. Billy Cundiff, however, is not the answer.

So in order for them to stay off that list, they are thinking about bringing in the kicker responsible for the missed field goal that cost the Ravens in last year's playoffs. You would think Harbaugh would call his brother and tell him that is a bad idea.

This should be posted on every bulletin board in every head coach's office.

He was asked several times, going back to when Akers missed a FG that could have won the game against St. Louis. Back then he was asked : "If the 49ers called you and asked you to take over for Akers, would you?" He emphatically said no he would not come back, he is retired.

Akers had a kicker competing against him during spring training and preseason- Giorgio Tavecchio from Cal. Maybe that competition helped Akers focus, In his first game of the season against Green Bay he kicked the 63 yard field goal tying the NFL record, since then he has gone steadily down hill.

Jim Harbaugh has a method to his madness, I guess he did this at Stanford too!! Whatever! So far it's working!

Agreed. But the Cundiff pick is terrible!

Good move by SF to try out kickers. I wish the Packers were doing the same thing. If they need a FG to win a playoff game, do they really want to count on Crosby?

Harbaugh is a "what have you done for me lately" kind of guy. If it works he'll be a genius. If not, he'll be a pr1ck.
