Report: Bills show early interest in Alex Smith

04:57 AM ET 01.03 | The Buffalo Bills won't be going to the playoffs this year, a fact that got head coach Chan Gailey and his entire staff canned earlier this week on Black Monday. But while the Bills will be sitting out the postseason, so too will their possible starter next year, despite the fact his team is the No. 2 seed in the NFC. Alex Smith is one of the most highly coveted free agent quarterbacks to hit the market this offseason, and the list of teams interested will grow exponentially. But the team apparently etching its name at the top of the chronological list of interest, is the Buffalo Bills, per a report via Twitter by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. But it's looking like the Bills would be willing to take a chance on using him as a stop-gap quarterback in Buffalo. The only question is, how does that sit with the man who'd be filling the job?

They won't be swindling anybody... They will be forced to cut him and most teams know this already and will wait till it happens...

If that's the case he won't be going to Buffalo. Why would anyone? Didn't work out so great for Super Mario!

Super Mario might have had a slow start but he played alot better down the stretch of the season... Smith will go to any team that will make him the starter and pay him like one... I doubt he cares which city that may be... I honestly see him being either on the Jets, Bills or Cards next season.

Like I have said countless times before the top 5 teams for Alex Smith to go to would be #1 Buffalo, #2 Oakland, #3 NYJ''s, #4 Kansas City, #5 Cleveland. I even said he should go to Buffalo after he was let go by the 49ers in 2011- the CBA kept him around a little longer.
One of these 5 teams would be better off trading for Smith than having the 49ers release him and go into free agency. A trade for Smith would save any of these teams lots of money, plus they would get Smith's current contract with the 49ers, so you have him for a couple more years and if things go good you extend his contract which is usually cheaper than haggling over a new contracts.

Mistake on 49ers part 'K' hasn't shown that much and I think Smith will play again soon.

Only if the 49ers drop him and he goes into free agency, teams would be better off trading for him and getting his current contract with the 49ers which would be less than having to bid on him in free agency.

Shouldn't they get a head coach before worrying about a qb?

No trades can be made until March, that deadline has long passed. his roster bonus and $7.5 guaranteed money kicks in April 1, plus incentives money.
Hard to trade him unless he cooperates in the whole deal, which means he would have to want to go to the team that might trade for him. You don't give up much of a draft pick for a guy that can walk away from you in one year and be UFA.

It looks like Smith is holding his breath in that picture. The Bills front office should not hold theirs over this.

The Bills have a competent QB already with a hefty contract. They need a good coach, Offensive Coordinator, and some playmakers to complement Fitzpatrick. Agree that thier backups, Thigpen & Jackson need to go.
