Stoudemire: 'I've never been taught defense'

08:09 AM ET 01.03 | Mike Woodson isn't worried about Amar'e Stoudemire's offense, but he is concerned about the recently returned forward's work at the other end of the floor. [And] Stoudemire knows that's where he needs the most improvement. In fact, STAT admitted after Wednesday's practice that defense was something he had never really learned -- until now with Woodson as his head coach. ... "I think just having a defensive coach for the first time in my career is going to help," he said. "I've never been taught defense in my whole career, so to now have a coach that actually teaches defense and teaches strategies, and knows positioning and posture, how to guard different plays, it's going to be helpful. I'm going to take it as a challenge."

I dont have a problem with the comment. He is just being honest. This new generation of ball players do not know the fundamentals of the game. They only rely on athleticism. Look at Lebron. He can't make a move to the rim without traveling. Even on a fast break he travels. And then he argues the call. Just using him as an example but a lot of guys nowadays aren't being taught correctly. Then to have someone like Dantoni as your coach 90% of your Professional career doesn't help. And let's not forget that he didnt go to college.

Hate to say it, but I kinda said he was a bad idea right from the get go for NY;
"Injury prone and mediocre defense...not worth the money"
Actually said the Amare sign was a knee-jerk reaction for not getting James...

I think Amare is alluding to the defense that he's seen the Knicks play. I must admit that for a stretch in the game against Portland with STAT, Melo and Chandler on the floor I saw a champioship defensive stance. So STAT's just referring to the defensive potential of this team... but the media always looks at it the wrong way...

the media? if you just read his quote verbatim it is pretty scary. All Star Caliber players don't chalk up their lack of defensive prowess to the reasoning of not being taught by their NBA coaches. Oh im sorry...he did go see Hakeem Olajuon this summer to work on his offensive game right? That's proof in the pudding...Amare take initiative for whatever HE WANTS to do. And playing defense isn't something he really cares for too much. Woodson won't move his feet any faster to identify the same sh** that he's been observing for how many years in the league. If he cannot recognize certain schemes and plays by now then there is no hope for this man, and any Knicks fan should be pissed reading these quotes.

Nobody taught him how to punch the glass holding the fire extinguisher either but he did that right?
Looks like the knicks have bigger problems than we thought.

umm being thrown into the NBA mix early actually means he has even less reasons to still not recognize schemes and certain plays. He was drafted in 02 for goodness sake. and EFFORT and understanding isn't a fundamental btw.

Gosh Amare, you've been playing basketball your entire life. Weren't you ever curious about defense, and maybe learning a little about it? Maybe do a little research? Read about the good defenders? Watch some tape? SHUT UP! This is the pro sports version of, "I was abused as a child". I can't take it. Serious.
