NHL considers adding teams to playoff pool

While it hasn't been part of the discussions for a collective bargaining agreement, Nick Kypreos of Rogers Sportsnet reported late Tuesday the NHL and NHL Players' Association have had talks about allowing four more teams -- two each in the East and West -- into the post-season this spring. That would increase the playoff pool to 20 teams and would offer the opportunity to create more fan interest in the post-season this year. The idea of having 66% of the teams make the playoffs doesn't sit well with some, but it's the most exciting time of the year. "They have to look at ways to create more revenues because the damage from this lockout is going to be big," said a league executive.

Message to all sports: The fans don't want more teams to be rewarded with post-season trips. All you have to do is look at the attendance and TV ratings for the college bowl games an the MLB playoffs. I don't follow the NHL and NBA close enough to know for sure, but I would guess that it's the same for those. When you've got empty seats (lots of them) and near "test pattern" ratings, you've oversaturated your market. NOBODY wants to see a team that's under .500 make it into the post-season, only to get swept. It's pointless and it's insulting to your fans. All you end up doing is making your regular season meaningless.

Sadly, this is where all sports is going simply because of the TV money the owners get for more playoff games. I don't like, I personally like as few playoff teams as possible to make the regular season more relevant, but its all about the almighty $$$$.
I have been saying for years, I can see the NHL and NBA eventually expand to 32 teams and have everyone get into the playoffs as they can have 5 rounds of equal teams. That way they can sell it to the casual fan that your team has a shot at winning all year, and anything can happen in the playoffs.

I was initially in favor of MLB adding the extra chance to get in. After this past season i do not see where it really added much drama.
