Jocketty: Keeping Reds starters won't be easy

08:15 AM ET 01.04 | While Walt Jocketty waits to learn whether Scott Rolen will retire, the Reds' GM has pressing concerns beyond Rolen. The club hasn't had any talks with the agents for Homer Bailey and Mat Latos since touching base at the Winter Meetings. Jocketty said the club would like to sign both long-term. A small-market club almost has to do that -- given the price of pitching. Anibal Sanchez went 9-13 with a 3.86 ERA last year and got a five-year, $80 million contract from Detroit. "It's been crazy," Jocketty said. "You want to reach a deal that's fair to the player and club. It won't be easy." Both Bailey and Latos are arbitration-eligible. The sides exchange salary numbers on Jan. 18. Not much usually happens before then.

The big problem for the small market teams is these pitchers are seeing the contracts some of these guys are getting and greed sets in and these teams cannot compete with the richer clubs for their services.

Seriously... Waiting to hear if Scott Rolen will retire?
He's a Free Agent (and thus not under contract with the Reds) - don't offer him a contract and it will make his decision that much easier.

what does the GM its trying to say with this type of feed back?? i mean there has to be a solution before the GM disolve the rotation, can't give up before the begin of the 2013 season,
the reds has enough good components to compete at higher level everything has a way of working things up, why bring up such a negative impression??

Scott Rolen is damn old and has been in varying states of decline for the last 8 seasons...
Now... Will he announce his retirement gracefully before the start of the season?
Or is he gonna pull a Piazza and wait til May - when it becomes apparent that the Phone is not gonna ring?

wiseup:f theReds lose Bailey and/ or Latos who fills those slots. Yes the plan is to put Chapman in rotation ,which no one knows if Chapman will be effective starting. That would leave Cueto Arroyo Chapman, and Leake. It would make no sense to not sign Latos after giving up the farm ( literallly) to S.D. to get him. Otherwise you would have to count on unproven starters Redmond or Cingrani
