Price open to 'right' deal

They locked up their #1 positional player. Would only make sense to lock up your ace. But the Rays don't take too many chances. Wouldn't be surprised to see him moved if the rays fall out of contention this year. If I'm a rays fan though, this isn't one of the ones you let get away!

Unless baseball puts a salary cap on these teams this kind of story will become more common, the rich get richer and the poor has to survive somehow.

It's a shame but, there is no way the Rays will be able to afford Price. Look what Greinke and Hammels received. In fact if he has another season like last year, his arbitration number for 2014 could jump to $16 to $18 million.

yeah, as a Red Sox fan I wouldn't mind seeing this guy out of the AL East, or even better in Boston. But as a baseball fan I wish more of these guys could play their entire career's where they want to, and not let money have to force their decision to leave a place they love.

No way the rays would trade him with in the division. Would be nice to see more players play their careers for one organization. But the organization has to stay competitive for the player to want to stay for that duration, like the braves and Chipper. Wonder how Halladay would feel about coming back to the jays now?

As a Rays fan it would kill me to see Price leave. He's quite a character and his ability aside, he's just fun to have on the team. But he's an absolute stud, and is going to get CC Sabathia money when he is a FA and unfortunately, the Rays just don't have that kind of scratch.

Yeah, which is why the Rays will probably trade him. After seeing what Seattle gave up for Bedard, and him repaying them with 15 wins... in 4 years. Young pitchers are a difficult read and as you said, greater risk to invest long term. But they would get a nice hual to keep their pockets full of prospects.

He's a class act. He threw out the first pitch last season for the home opener of my son in law's high school team. He also gave my 3 yr old grandson a signed ball.

It would take the loss of at least an entire season to even get close to a cap. MLBPA is solid as a rock.

The new luxury tax rules are as close to a salary cap as you'll get in baseball. And don't worry about the "poor" teams in baseball. Their owners have plenty of money. They just choose not to spend it. You really think Jeffrey Loria down in Florida had a firesale this offseason because he's strapped for cash?

the teams would need to lose 145 games per season in order to be a qualifier in the salary cap,i mean a lost with this type of numbers for 10 seasons think it would be enough? to push for salary cap??

likewise, then david price its younger and has tremendous resiliants in his own will, i think it depends in how well you take care physically and mentally!!!

Actually, the new luxury tax rules that kick in in 2014 are pretty close to a cap. Even the Yankees are desperately trying to get under that threshold.

Also, you may think a hard cap only hurts the big market teams, but it actually hurts the small-market teams as well because with no more luxury tax, that also means the small-market teams will no longer receive tens of millions in free money every year from the luxury tax pool.

Actually, both the Yankees and the Red Sox have been cutting payroll the past couple of years to ensure they get under the threshold by 2014. Also, capping the big teams from spending doesn't solve the problem of certain owners not willing to invest in their teams.
