08:19 AM ET 01.04 | John Calipari has gone beyond the personal skills of coaching to keep his players motivated this year. Moving away from the art of persuasion, he's turned to the science of indisputable evidence. ... [A Thursday post on his website] spoke of a "device" that gives UK "the ability to monitor and check how much effort players are giving in real time. Because we are able to read their heart rates, now we know who is maxing out in practice and who is hiding, who thinks they're going hard and who isn't, who is able to push themselves through pain, and who has mental toughness to be special." But the device was not identified. UK spokesman DeWayne Peevy said in a text message that the program (read: Calipari) did not want to identify the manufacturer.

Yep, that's what it sounds like to me. My lovely wife has used this kind of thing for years in her running/swimming workouts, but I never do, for precisely the reason UK is using it -- it can tell when you're slacking!

This is ridiculous on so many levels. You cant' solve a discipline/motivation problem with a gadget. Here's an idea Calipari - try recruiting character not just one-and-done baller skills.

You know what would work better?
Shock collars that you use to train dogs with, when he thinks there slacking, just hit the button on the remote to give them a little shocking incentive.

Actually, it's an NBA Monitor'. If you slack off it shows you dropping in the draft. That should be incentive enough to pick it up a bit.
