New rule scares clubs away from Kyle Lohse

The rules are getting really complicated. I wondered why there was no buzz around a starting pitcher under 35 coming off two excellent seasons.

things can get ackwards any time new rules and clause get into such agreements,should every player type A or type B has to go through the same rules?? but things are a little of different with scott boras clients, one, boras its by far the biggest block for free agents owned by boras, and two, the new rules from the MLB,,,

i wonder if BOURN its boras client by any means??if so then that explain WHY the OF has not signed any contract at all,,,

I think this has more to do with the fact that the other players in free agency didn't carry this requirement. Both Bourn and Lohse carry it. Greinke, Sanches, and Jackson were all free and clear of the draft pick and draft bonus cap obsticle.

The players union is not going to like the way this is playing out.

What's the matter with $13.3m?

I'm curious to why Greinke, Sanches, and Jackson were not offered a qualifying offer. The Angels were not planning on signing Greinke anyways so why didn't they try to get a draft pick instead of letting him go for nothing? Of course we know that he will not accept the 1 year 13.3 mill contract.

new rules do not scare the teams from free agents, rather SCOTT BORA$$$ scare the teams from free agents, especially IF boras its their agent!!!

the angels figureout they didn't need any draft pick, and they like the way they ended without nothing most of the times, wonder why the halos farm system its so thin??

Me too. Why wouldn't EVERY team offer EVERY good pending free agent a qualifying offer?

Lohse will get signed yet, as some team breaks down and decides they need another starter.

Minnesota? Boston? Houston? San Diego? Seattle? Texas? Kansas City? Someone will break.

None of the other free agents fell into the qualifying offer category under the new rules except Hamilton. Greinke, Sanchez, and Jackson were free and clear of the draft picks and qualifying offers.

Don't put too much concern into Boras being his agent. Lohse has taken control and told him to make deals before. He did it to sign the 4 year deal with the cardinals.

Did Boras lack foresight this offseason? I would love to believe that but he's too sharp. That said, I can't figure out Boras' angle.

Neither Greinke nor Sanchez were eligible for draft pick compensation, since the player has to be on your team for a full season. Both Greinke and Sanchez were mid-season trade acquisitions. Edwin Jackson was on the Nationals for a full year, but the Nationals declined to make him a qualifying offer, thus removing the draft pick part of the equation. The reason they did that is they didn't need him in their rotation, and had he accepted the qualifying offer, would have been a very expensive sixth starter, so they let him walk

They agreed to it for good reason Do not forget that a team had to offer $13.3 million to get that draft pick in return. That is serious money. The player turned down $13.3 million!!!! He is taking a chance. His choice.

And remember, the team that signs him has a lot less money to spend in the draft and you can only spend so much. There is a cap on that pool of money.

Trout syndrome: The Yankees wanted to draft trout, they knew all about him, he grew up in their backyard but because they lost their first draft pick that year becasue of a FA signing he ends up with the Angels. And the rest is history. Teams are aware of that. He turned down good money and is taking a gamble.
