11:40 AM ET 01.06 | AJ Allmendinger tried to close the book on 2012 by going to bed early on New Years Eve and not celebrating the end of the year. But it was hard for him when just a few days later he drove through the tunnel at Daytona International Speedway. He couldn't help but remember last July when he drove through the DIS tunnel wondering if he would ever race again as NASCAR had just suspended him for a failed drug test the previous weekend at Kentucky Speedway. Allmendinger was fired by Penske Racing for the failed drug test, which he said was the result of unknowingly taking an Adderall pill given to him by a friend of a friend. He was reinstated 12 weeks after the test and eight weeks after he had started NASCAR's recovery program. He drove two races for Phoenix Racing following his reinstatement and while mentioned as a possible driver for select races for the team in 2013 Allmendinger said he has nothing set beyond the 24-hour Daytona race.

Guess AJ should have thought more about his future while he was using those illegal drugs.. you reap what you sow.. I don't feel sorry for him

not to defend him, but adderall isnt an illegal drug.. if his story is true about his friend giving him one then its not really a big deal.

1st mistake was taking 'something' a friend gave him.. not knowing what he's taking in the 1st place.. and 2nd.. if AJ knew he was taking adderall.. it contains amphetamines .. and those are illegal under Nascar rules.. so it is a big deal

You're saying 'everyone' deserves a '2nd chance'..why doesn't Mayfield fall into that catagory??

Agree....he's seen others with these issues, so he should have been fully aware of the consequences.

Agree......if he was feeling that bad, that he had to risk taking something, then he should have got a sub driver for that one race......no one is really buying that excuse anyway,

Mayfield's mistakes were .. one.. his 'supposedly' drug use..
two.. taking on Nascar by suing them.. everyone knows you don't go against the establishment.. cause you'll lose everytime.. if the Nascar brass wants you out of the sport.. they'll get you out of the sport.. one way or another
