FedEx field under fire after RGIII goes down

07:59 AM ET 01.07 | Robert Griffin III's injured knee buckled and turf flew. By then, FedEx Field's playing surface looked like the aftermath of a monster truck rally. A gash of brown dirt dotted by the token shred of grass stretched from end zone to end zone. The logo at midfield was too blurred to recognize. Hunks of turf went missing in the sections fortunate to retain any green. ... The quarterback didn't return to the game, leaving questions about the health of his re-injured knee -- no diagnosis was immediately forthcoming -- and the FedEx Field playing surface that has long been an object of derision. ... Safety Reed Doughty, like his teammates, pointed to both teams contending with the same field conditions. "They're not ideal," Doughty said.

Griffin should've been pulled from that game early in the 3rd quarter, at the latest. When he tried that hobbling run to the left and ducked out of bounds it was crystal clear he wasn't going to be effective.
Letting him stay out there and risk further injury under those conditions was just terrible coaching. A healthy Cousins is a better option at that point.

The field was ugly, but that's what you get with natural grass!

The problem is this is the first time this century that the Redskins have played at home in January. The turf warranty must have expired on December 31.

Grass is great when it's in good shape, not so much fun when it turns to swamp

That field was so chewed up that it looked like it had been roto-tilled.

The field wasn't great but it's not the fields' fault for RGIII's injury. Blame should be placed directly on the Shanahan team. It was very clear that RGIII wasn't dinged up, he was hurt. They might have screwed the franchise for years if he can't recover from whatever happened to him.

They can't get anything right in that city, can they?

Agreed. What was the point of leaving him out there at that point? Was he going to make some kind of crazy, momentum-shifting play that would lock the game up for the Skins? The guy could barely walk at that point.
This sets a terrible, terrible example. For a rookie who has battled knee problems for two months to be left in a game in which he is quite clearly incapacitated, what does that say to other players? That they aren't worth a damn unless they're playing, even if they're hurt beyond a doubt and feeling pain with every single snap? Does anybody believe Ponder was hurt more than RGIII? Why does he sit, knowing that move would certainly mean the Vikes lose, and RGIII play when Washington has a backup who proved once already this season he can at least keep up with his offence, if not impress on his own. It's twisted, and it's an example of a culture where guys are looked down upon if they don't play through pain no matter how big or small, despite everything we know these days about the long-term effects of injuries.
And frankly, if you need to have the world's greatest knee surgeon on the sidelines during your games to monitor your player, that player should not be playing. Period.

Shanny needs to learn to protect Griffin from Griffin.

Put in turf...
The only question I have about Shanny's decision making, is why did he go away from Alfred Morris in the 2nd quarter? Should've kept pounding him. Especially when you see the QB can't hardly walk.

I'd imagine it tells Kirk Cousins that RGIII thinks he can play better in a wheelchair than Cousins can play when healthy...

Not us. But, then again, the home state of the entire Massachusetts delegation is California, since they all robo-vote with Nasty Pelosi.

Is there ANY organization that can punish Shanahan in some way? NFLPA sue him for failing to take care of his players?

If The R took himself out of the playoff game, he would've been labeled another Cutler...
If Shanny had benched him, it would've been another Strassburg situation.
We'll be back.
