Kelly waiting for the Patriots?

07:59 AM ET 01.07 | To be sure, Bill Belichick is no threat to leave the Patriots any time soon, but who in the world, when the time comes, would replace him? [When] you turn down three NFL teams in a 12-month period, it can mean only one thing -- you know exactly which NFL job you truly covet and are willing to wait for it. [Chip Kelly] told me once, "My dream job is always the one I have." ... What I believe now is that Kelly, who makes $3.5 million in guaranteed salary and has the blessing of Nike-infused infrastructure, knows his current gig is the best amateur coaching job in America. I now suspect he would only trade it for the dream gig of every little kid who grows up in New England -- head coach of the Patriots.

Maybe he's waiting another year to really see what the NCAA has in store for Oregon.

Kelly took a look and knew that his gimmick offense would not work in the NFL and when you're a one trick pony now what do you do?

No. Bill Belichick is only 60. He lives for football. If he can groom Mallet (or someone else) into a championship-level quarterback, he'll coach for another 15 years.

Actually, word on the street is that he wants the Panthers job. He wants to have Cam Newton run his offense. ESPN was talking about that on the set of the Fiesta Bowl. Though he'll have to wait until 2014 for that now. A little ironic how decides to stay at Oregon the day after the Panthers announced Rivera is coming back next season.
