Luongo-to-Leafs gaining momentum

08:13 AM ET 01.07 | How soon before the main storyline in Vancouver involves trading Roberto Luongo? After leaving the Toronto organization to become the assistant general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Rick Dudley claimed the Maple Leafs, with the same roster they had last spring, would be a playoff team if they had solid goaltending. Roberto Luongo certainly would fit that bill. And, amidst all this Luongo-to-Toronto speculation, this could very well be a case of "where there's smoke, there's fire." ... While general manager Brian Burke has denied a report from last fall that indicated that a Luongo trade already had been worked out and would be implemented once a new CBA had been ratified, there is no doubt that the Leafs and Canucks have had serious discussions.

Yeah. They slashed the cap, but the Leafs are going to go "meh" and take a contract that will be bought out in the summer if it can't be traded today.

I don't like to give him benefit of the doubt, but this is too dumb for even BB to think twice about.

If any goaltender is in play right now, I truly believe it is Jonas Hiller. Contract's up next season, Anaheim is rebuilding, they're probably going to have to trade Perry &Getzlaf, and maybe Ryan too. They have John Gibson, who just backstopped the Yanks to junior cheeseburger gold. It makes sense to capitalize now especially with a stacked draft this summer.

And, of course, we all know how much Burke likes dipping back into the old Pond...

it seems every time the cba expires the league expects the players to rescue the owners from their own stupidity by sacrificing, how about they put in the cba that there ill be no trading of first rounders cause i can see brian jurke trading he leafs next 5 1st rounders for luongo

If you get a chance, see This is 40. Funny movie. But there was one scene that's had me going since Friday - a guy who is never around is leaving again, and another character irkedly proclaims "Yeah, see you when the Cubs win the Pennant." I found it hilarious. I quickly changed two of those terms around and now have my new e-mail signature.

And why would BB trade for a player with the front loaded contract. He hates them so much. It would be very hypocritical of him.

I just don't think anybody takes this deal off the Canucks' hands. Gillis is screwed, everybody knows it. He'll buy Bobby out, because there will be no alternative.

Again you're right. A man with his principles would never do that.

The Wife and i saw that Flick over Christmas Holidays. I took a nasty wife elbow for laughing out loud when he crashed his bike into the car door.

Not a big fan of it from a Leafs perspective... in other words Burke will do it.

I think it might work out for both parties. And the fact that he wouldn't have to play in Vancouver this year (unless they both get to The Finals....ha ha ha ha ha) might make it better yet

Do you want your team to make the play-offs ?? They NEED Luongo to even have a sniff at making it in...if my goaltending duo was Reimer and Sievens i'd vote "no confidence" in it whatsoever...with Luongo in net your team has a chance....and so what if his contract is for another 73 more seasons...his cap hit is only 5.3

I don't mind Luongo coming here if it's as a free agent. But the talking heads here are acting as if Irk and Gillis have had a deal in place since June but were allowing it to ferment into something with a little more edge and now that we have a CBA that totally makes his contract THAT much worse, Burke is texting, calling, telegramming, paging, carrier pigeoning and snail mailing Gillis to get this done.

It just doesn't make sense. Like I said before, Jonas Hiller is where the Leafs' attention should be paid at the moment.

No, I don't. I want them to finish dead effin last. The Leafs have so much cap space the next two upcoming summers, it could actually become a contender within the next 3 years. This core, the Kessel Lupul JVR Grabovski Kulemin Phaneuf core, aren't the future of this team. JVR and maybe Kessel are the only two who should still be here by the end of 2014.

C'mon man...yeah right the Ducks are gonna trade their core...you must be related to Argos.

Thats ehy he's an idiot..a GM should keep his thoughts to himself but good ol Burke loves to watch his own interviews.

I didn't say anything about that, if you read properly. I said Hiller should be in play, and they will likely wind up trading Perry and Getzlaf before the deadline as there is literally next to no chance they stay in Anaheim. I didn't say they would be traded to the Leafs. I hope they aren't. I think Getzlaf has lost a lot of what made him a great player, and both will still likely hit the open market in the summer if they are traded. What good is a core if it's the core of a bad team?
