07:46 AM ET 01.08 | The Bears may yet open their doors to one of the biggest names in Chicago sports history. Mike Singletary, one of the Bears greatest players, will interview for the team's coaching vacancy, according to a league source. The Hall of Fame linebacker is currently serving as a special assistant under another former Bears player, Leslie Frazier, the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Singletary was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, but he compiled an 18-22 record. He was replaced by former Bears quarterback Jim Harbaugh. The Bears have requested permission from the Vikings to speak to Singletary and Vikings special teams coordinator Mike Priefer. The Tribune first reported the request for the two Viking assistants.

That was my first thought, too: Rooney Rule.
Da Bears are interviewing Singletary, they're interviewing CFL coaches ... maybe I should polish up my resume and give 'em a call. These fools are desperate.

He is considered a God in Chicago, good choice, hopfully he learned from his past, I'd give him a shot, but I'd have to get Melman's approval!

Bears have a good team. Solid defense and just a few key pieces (OL) to add on offense. Not sure why they're having trouble filling this position. Ownership?

I hate to say it, but the only capacity in which the Bears need to have Samurai Mike roaming the sideline is as an assistant coach...

Bill Belichick was fired from the old Cleveland Browns after compiling a 36-44 record and finishing his final season with the team 5-11, the last year before that team moved to Baltimore.

Not sure why they'd have trouble filling the spot. Look all the time Lovie was given (deserved in my opinion, but none the less).

Are Bears fans supposed to believe that replacing Lovie with Singletary signals some kind of a step forward?

Precisely..
Did or did not Singletary get canned in San Fran just prior to Harbaugh coming in and leading them to 2 playoff runs now?
Lovie Smith is better than Mike.
The Bears need an offensive mind to come in with the new HC.

I guess u didnt see the ESPN piece about how many coaches achieved greater success at their SECOND job. Partially because its pretty difficult to be a HC of an NFL team so it takes time, ownership and personnel..but of course I'm sure you thought of these things before blasting Mike S.

And Tom Brady was a sixth-round pick. That doesn't mean you give a bad coach a second chance or draft your QB of the future in the sixth just hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.
