07:55 AM ET 01.09 | Adam LaRoche's signing in Washington makes for some writing on the wall in the case of Nationals left fielder Mike Morse, though he may be limiting his market somewhat. Morse strongly opposes being a DH, according to major-league sources. The issue, sources say, will carry weight for some AL clubs. Morse is "not a very gifted defender" and would better fit certain teams as a DH, according to one rival executive who leans heavily on advanced metrics. Trades sometimes turn on such details. ... One executive pegs the Mariners as the favorites to land Morse, noting that the team's earlier acquisitions of DH Kendrys Morales and outfielder Raul Ibanez indicate that the M's are now emphasizing offense over defense.

The Red Sox will need a first baseman, with the whole Napoli thing still up in the air.

I would be glad to DH this season for 6.75 million that Morse will make.

On paper, he's a good fit for the Rays. But if doesn't want to DH, the Rays need to stay far far away from him. Pat Burrell didn't want to DH but signed with the Rays as a last resort. We all know how that turned out.

A guy that doesn't want to be a DH should work extra hard on his D.

One year left on his contract and then he is FA. That does enter into any equation of trade value.

Ironically, Morse started his career as a minor league shortstop for the Ms. And he is much better defensively as a firstbaseman than he is as an outfielder.

True. But Napoli just cost money, whereas Morse would cost players and prospects.
I am not sold 100 percent on either.

They may have no choice at this point. Their options are extremely limited.

The Sox might want to consider Sctt Hairston who started out as an infielder and might be able to play first base, he should add some pop to the lineup with the short wall in left field. He can't be any worse than the Gus they got!!!
