Pirates walking away from Liriano?

07:56 AM ET 01.09 | Pittsburgh's plan to sign free-agent lefty Francisco Liriano is now on hold, possibly permanently, thanks to an injured arm suffered around Christmas. General manager Neal Huntington on Tuesday confirmed the injury. But, citing medical privacy laws, Huntington declined to say how Liriano got hurt or whether the injury would prevent him from being ready for the start of spring training Feb. 12. ... If the club's interest in Liriano continues to ebb, Huntington will look at other free-agent and trade options for starter candidates. Kyle Lohse, Shaun Marcum and Joe Saunders are the top free agents still available. The Pirates could try to re-sign Jeff Karstens, whom they non-tendered in November. Huntington also did not rule out standing pat.

Wow, I wonder what the guy did to trash his arm more...this is a lot more interesting than Elvis Andrus getting a HBP. Could the market for Lohse be so thin that he falls to the Pirates?

HEY....Oh, never mind!

What does Lohse want any way? For the right price he has been a very serviceable pitcher over the last few years and could be a decent additon to a team's rotation. A three to a five man in the rotation.

On another note: anyone been having trouble looking into this page? I keep getting a page unavailabe screen and wind up trying to log in over and over before I finally have success.

His biggest problem is whoever signs him will lose that 1st round draft pick, and the money allotted to that pick.

That seems to be the case with some the remaining FA's like Soriano. Could the MLBPA say this is a form of collusion?

I'm curious I really don't know the answer.

Wasn't it part of the CBA that was agreed upon by the MLBPLA ?

The Bucs are probably getting a major break that Liriano hurt himself. They would have overpaid for a average pitcher. The Bucs cannot afford Lohse who turn down a one year contract with the Cards for 13 million.

Just thinking of financial resources...hey, they're better than my NL team, the ever disappointing Cubbies (woo).

I don't know if I would be willing to give Lohse $13 mil if I were a GM. Even for year. As I said earlier he is servicable; not real good. Last year was an anomaly. 0r as some would say: a career year for him.
