Coach on the hottest seat

08:09 AM ET 01.09 | Among a list that includes relatively new coaches (Joe Sacco, Guy Boucher and Mike Yeo) and veteran Lindy Ruff, Chicago's Joel Quenneville may lead the way. After guiding the Hawks to their first Cup win since 1962 back in 2010, veteran coach Joel Quenneville has been one-and-done the past two playoff seasons. ... Perhaps more concerning for the talent-laden Blackhawks was their dismal performance on special teams, as they were tied for 25th on the power play and 27th on the penalty kill. There were rumblings that Quenneville was in trouble in the offseason, and he'll need his team to start strong and show improvement on special teams to keep those rumblings from becoming something more.

I don't see Quenneville being fired. When the Habs came knocking the Blackhawks moved pretty fast to make sure he didn't leave...

The penalty kill would be greatly assisted by a top tier Goalie.

too much sense in Chicago. Toronto, on the other hand...

January 9, 2013  08:51 AM ET

I refuse to believe that Sacco, Boucher or Quenneville are on a hot seat, especially given the nature of the shortened season.

How's Hossa doing?

Oh yeah..

Not to mention they gave away their Cup-winning goalie for Marty Turco.

Oh, and Ray Emery.

They were all on hot seats last year. What would change? Boucher especially - Tampa is way too good to be missing the playoffs, and Stevie has put his faith in Lindback. Marty isn't going to be around forever, and this team changes drastically once he's gone.

Touche Danny. And the of course there's being forced to get rid of big buff and ladd.

the season is a one-off sprint; unless some team gets off to an absolutely horrible start, I don't see why you would fire your coach. They're not being put in a position to really evaluate incoming talent, or to impose their system. the first 4-5 games are going to be total crap-shoots.

agreed....unless some coach does something incredibly stupid....this season has to be a mulligan

I know they had to make tough decisions. But they made the wrong ones. This is what seperates good GMs, like the one in Florida, and GMs like Bowman.

except that the one in florida is there because it was his fault! I agree though, Bowman has not been impressive, while Talon is a much better talent evaluator.

Eh..last shortened season, 3 coaches were fired mid-season, including Melrose who was less than 2 years removed from a Cup appearance.

Doesn't mean much, but it can and probably will happen.
