07:52 AM ET 01.10 | Sacramento was preparing for a basketball game Wednesday, but the long-term future of the Kings took over the headlines. After saying for years they would never sell their basketball team, members of the Maloof family now appear close to unloading [the Kings] to an out-of-town group for what could be a record price. Sources told The Bee on Wednesday that the family has been talking with a deep-pocketed Seattle investment group about a sale and team move to that city. One report pegged the sales price at an NBA record of $500 million or more. But, during a whipsaw day of Internet rumors about a possible secret sale, two sources with knowledge of the situation adamantly told The Bee no deal is done and no formal offer has been made.

This is pretty much a foregone conclusion. Once the Sacramento arena deal fell through, it was only a matter of time before talk strengthened in terms of relocating the team to Seattle. The fans have to understand that the team is for sale with the intention of relocating it and not saying that it's for sale, selling it to an out of town buyer who lies about keeping the team in that city, and then moves the team once he doesn't get what he wants. While it'll be a sad day for Sacramento fans, at least it's not the same mess that Clay Bennett pulled with the Sonics and the city of Seattle.
