07:55 AM ET 01.10 | Are the Red Sox getting any closer to signing Mike Napoli? Here is what Ben Cherington had to offer about the [Napoli] situation when he was on MLB Network Radio on Wednesday: "All I can say is that at the outset of the offseason it was our intent to add offense at first base, and we pursued Mike Napoli as everyone knows. Until there's a deal, there's no deal, and it's clear, I think, everyone knows that there's some issues that we've had to try to work through. We remain hopeful that we'll be able to work through them ... I don't want to speak for Mike, but I hope he feels the same way. Until we do [work something out] there's nothing to report, there's no deal and we'll just have to keep working at it."

I would hope that Cherington is working on an alternative solution because it doesn't look like this Napoli deal will ever be resolved.

I wish the Bosox could just buy him from the Nats instead of having to trade for him.

It would seem the Nats would have the leverage in that deal.

Just my opinion but I really think this whole thing is a cluster **** and the Sox mangement is screwing the pooch.

Sometimes doing nothing - even if temporarily - is the wiser choice.

At least in the past, Boston management didn't show their hand until a deal was done and signed. So don't expect us all to know what happened or is happening. Secrecy actually protects all parties here.

As for doing bad things to pooches, I am reluctant to declare that until deals are made. There are a few management made in years past (e.g. Lackey) that I'm sure they wish they could take back. Given the reports of a hip issue here, it's best to proceed wisely.

First base isn't even a "gotta have" for Boston. Like many teams, they'd prefer to spend more time, effort, and money on starting pitching. So I'm not going to lose sleep over them holding out for a better deal with Napoli.

Personally, I don't want it to be resolved. Boston needs a real first baseman and if that means a bit less offense in exchange for a guy that the rest of the infielders can count on then I'm OK with that.

pure much,at the same time the red sox GM try to explain,, if the player can't play there is no deal untill the player its able to play fully healthy then we will endorse any updates,,,

This is so typical of the ineptness the Red Sox front office has demonstrated the past four years, one screwup after another.
