07:58 AM ET 01.10 | A candidacy that has been long debated will finally have its day this time next year. Yes, Mike Mussina will be eligible for induction in Cooperstown. ... Mussina was 270-153 with a 3.68 ERA in 537 games. He struck out 2,813 batters in 3,562 2/3 innings over his 18 seasons. He was a five-time All-Star. He finished in the top six in Cy Young voting nine times, placing second in 1999. He won seven Gold Gloves. Mussina's critics will point to how he never won the Cy Young. How he won 20 games only once, in his final season. How he never won a World Series. ... Mussina was clean, but is he a Hall of Famer? Other first-timers on the 2014 ballot will include Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Frank Thomas and Jeff Kent.

Mussina is on the fence regarding election. I see him getting in eventually.
Regarding Thomas: Ya know, maybe not first ballot worthy but probably gets in on first ballot unless someone knows something I don't. His numbers ain't shabby at all. Only question I have is why the big drop-off in BA at about the midpoint of his career? Just weird.

Maddux should get in on first ballot, everyone else will probably have to wait!

Log onto SI and one of the first things you see on the site is a blurb regarding MLB and that noone was voted into the Hall and SI declares the Hall to still be "clean".
Just want to ask: And excatly how do they know that for a fact?
I won't even get into the fact that certain already-in playerss who we consider "clean" and among the greats of all time used greenies, etc... but exactly how does SI know for sure that some of those who are in the Hall did not use steroids?
As someone here has pointed out already that is the great conundrum ain't it?

With respect to the statistics of Bonds, McGuire and Sosa being inflated because of steriod use, I submit this point for consideration.
If they were hitting those dingers against the Roger Clemens, Andy Pettites and other pitchers that were juicing too, where was the competitive advantage gained?

I think there's got to be more dominance for somebody to be considered a Hall Of Famer in my mind. Moose was outstanding for a long time, an All-Star yes. He's close like a lot of players are. We have a tendancy to want guys we like voted in but if we don't maintain an ultra high standard then Cooperstown will have to tear down half of Main Street for expansion.

On another note: In Stratford Ct, home town of Victoria Soto, one of the teachers who was slain in the Sandy Hook tragedy, four teenagers (age about 19) were arrested after they were spotted behind an elementary school with rifles. (Stratford is about twenty minutes from Newtown.)
Now it appears that the four who were found in a wooded area with two rifles with scopes that were described as "high powered pellet guns used for small game" and two "Air-soft hand guns that fire plastic pellets" were not there to do anything outside of target shooting or "hunting" small creatures but were bound and determined to get themselves arrested and brought to a lockup instead of just being issued citatons for violating town ordinances and being stupid.
When the men were asked by an officer if they realized how inappropiate it was to be behind a school and, in fact, on school propery with weapons in light of what happened in Newtown, one of the jamochs said "If I was going to shoot any kids, don't you think I would have already?"
Bingo: Jail time.
