Kelly departure could devastate Irish

08:02 AM ET 01.10 | From Grand Valley State, to Central Michigan, to Cincinnati, and to Notre Dame, he has been comfortable seeking greener pastures. Brian Kelly has always been successful. And Brian Kelly has always been a climber. ... For Notre Dame this is a gut-punch. The Irish have suffered through nearly two decades of poor to average coaches while a perception was built that the school could never again be nationally relevant due to strict academics, location, a lack of conference affiliation and a host of other items. Then when Notre Dame finally gets a capable coach who quickly proves none of that is true, who restores a measure of glory and has the program primed for even more, it might lose him?

Although I would hate to see Kelly leave, the Irish will get another big name coach quickly! He turned a corner with the program and they are now a very attractive job.

Would Urban Meyer leave Ohio State if ND came open? He has said ND is his dream job, and the ND job doesn't open all that often, because most coaches that coach ND have to be fired or they go to the NFL. It might be awhile before he has a chance again.

I hear Dooley is available. He really is a good gameday coach. Just ask the trio of early round picks from his impressive 5-7 team this year.

IMO he is at his dream job. Remember UF was able to get Meyer even when ND was trying to hire him. Not his dream job.

The only thing Kelly proved at Notre Dame is how desperate there is for the need of a playoff system so that "BCS Title" game never happened. Even though Notre Dame might have finished 6th or 7th in the SEC they still have a sweet TV deal with NBC and can afford to pay any coach who wants to come to South Bend Indiana. And there is the big hurdle. Top recruits can go play anywhere, be on TV and get drafted into the NFL, why would you go to Indiana?

You mean you don't want to go where it's triple digits in the summer and then negative temps in the winter while surrounded by nothing but corn?

Why don't you ask the recruits headed to ND next year? They currently have the top ranked recruiting class according to Rivals.com...

ND ain't the best gig going.....plus Cincy offered him almost 3 mil to stay Chicago, Philadelphia would be alot better job then he has now......but he is not the same level of a coach as the 4mil club you listed.
Just like your facts and stats said ND would be Alabama, your facts here are very misleading in ND fans eyes.

And that ended up biting ND in the butt big time. Weis had a hot first year and TPTB got jittery that he'd bolt, hence the mega contract that proved costly a few years later.
The big difference there (from the ND administration's perspective) is that Weis came from the NFL to college, so there was a genuine concern that he'd be more prone to go back there, plus he had a lot of contacts there. That isn't the case with Kelly.
And, isn't it ironic that so much time was spent by the press about Saban bolting to the NFL after the NCG, and none was spent on Kelly doing that.
