08:21 AM ET 01.10 | Among the Hall of Fame hopefulls, Mike Piazza was shut out, too -- something that didn't sit well with old friend Tommy Lasorda. [Arguably] the top hitting catcher in baseball history will have to wait at least another year for induction after Piazza received 57.8% in his first time on the ballot -- 98 votes shy of the 75% required for election. "I was hoping he would make it, I thought he was deserving of it," Lasorda said Wednesday night in a phone interview. "People talk about the steroids era, and I don't believe the players involved in that should ever be voted in. But I believe in (Piazza) that he's not one of them." Lasorda, of course, convinced the Dodgers to draft Piazza in the 62nd round in 1988.

Get over it Tommy. As good as Piazza ( I won't get into anything about allegations of "help") was offensively he was not that great defensively and does not merit entering the Hall on a first ballot vote by the BBWAA.

The Commissioner did nothing to inform the public, who tested positive on drug tests, this is the results!!! Next Year Maddux is a slam dunk, Tom Glavine, Frank Thomas, Jeff Kent get added to the list and will also take some votes from Piazza and this years group, it's not going to get any easier soon! Thanks Bud Light!

Great hitter He deserves to be in the Hall . One problem Tommy ,If I remember correctly Piazza said several years ago if he made it to cooperstown he would want to be remembered as a Met not a Dodger.

Glad to see no one got in this time. Please, keep it clean and never allow the likes of Barry Bonds and the other cheaters in the HOF. They are a disgrace and never belong there.
The likes of Barry Bonds is not good for the young people of this country. Following him they get the feeling that the end result is all that counts and it is OK to cheat by using enhancing drugs during your career. This country has enough problems with our youth so we need to show them the right way.

What exactly is a "first ballot" Hall-of-Famer? If every writer did not vote for a player because he was not a "first ballot" Hall-of-Famer, only players elected on their first year of eligibility would get into the Hall-of-Fame. A player must receive at least one vote to be on the ballot the following season. Maybe the voters would take their responsibilities more seriously if there was only one vote. Why would someone vote against a player such as Gary Carter for five years, then vote for him the sixth time?

Yes, but that shouldn't be incriminating evidence since you can get back acne without ever taking steroids.

Why is this so easily forgotten? Do you really think the hall is clean? I think the guys deserve to be let in and have the circumstances of their accomplishments explained alongside their plaque. They get in, but they'll forever have to have the asteriks next to their plaques. It's only fair considering that MLB (and all it's fans) pretended not to know for so long. We let these guys become home run kings, etc. so let's live with the (non) decsion we made.

He was one of the worst catchers ever. He could home runs in a home run era. He wasn't a complete player, therefore, he did not get in on the first ballot. He might get in later. However, if Dale Murphy is still getting snubbed, I can see a lot of borderline players waiting a while.
