07:49 AM ET 01.11 | Longtime NFL assistant Monte Kiffin may yet make his way back to the NFL. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and coach Jason Garrett have focused their search for a defensive coordinator on [Kiffin], according to team and league sources. It is unknown whether the 72-year-old Kiffin has been offered the job, but he has emerged as the leading candidate from a list that also includes Ray Horton, a former Cowboys player and current Cardinals defensive coordinator who has interviewed for several head-coaching positions recently. If Kiffin is hired, the Cowboys would be switching from a 3-4 defensive front to a 4-3, forcing pass-rusher DeMarcus Ware to play defensive end, with his hand on the ground for the first time in his career.

JJ missed the boat then since Kiffin is older than he is.

Physically or mentally? Or both?

kiffin was just horrible @ usc...this makes zero sense in my opinion

It was so bad that his own son had to fire him.

So the Cowboys are going with Three Back Monte?

But he is younger than Dick LeBeau... so there is that.

Kiffen couldn't be successful with the kind of talent U$C buys, I mean recruits. And to make matters worse, they'll have to change their scheme for him. All because he did a great job with Tampa back in the late Paleozoic era.

Sounds good to me.

Honestly - I wouldn't be too sad to get away from the 3-4.

Kiffin couldn't stop Oregon's offense. What makes JJ think he can stop RGIII?

I was hoping Jerry would go new school instead of old school with this hiring.

I've quit hoping for anything rational with Jerry.

There's no point.

but we have the pieces in place to b a solid 3-4 defense, we jus needed a lil bit more depth cuz we had all our backers go dwn for tha most part and im sure ware doesnt even want his hand on the ground playn end
