08:02 AM ET 01.11 | Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner made the most of his exception. [Steinbrenner] doesn't often talk to the media, but he stopped to take questions for several minutes on his way out of the Major League Baseball owners' meetings Thursday in Paradise Valley, Ariz. Here's what he had to say: Question: On the state of the Yankees' off-season. ... Steinbrenner: "We've signed three or four of the biggest free agents on the market. We're pretty happy with that. It's great to have Andy (Pettite) back and (Hiroki) Kuroda and Ichiro (Suzuki). (Kevin) Youkilis I'm excited about. I've always liked him as a player. We've got some work to do, still. We need another bat. We're not done yet."

I wouldn't call who they signed the biggest free agents on the market. Good players but certainly not the big names that would be associated with past Yankees off seasons.

Actually, outside of two or three players there were no really big names to sign in this year's frree agent market. And the two biggest, I thought got way too much money and probably would not have fit well in NY any way.
So, essentially Hal is right in his overall assessment...
And, I don't know if anyone caught the part in the article where he says, "Is our goal 189 next year? Yes. BUT (my caps) only if I'm convinced that the team I see is a championship-caliber team."
Think Hal won't loosen the purse strings if'n a certain player becomes availble. Especially, if the Yankees are floundering in the standings? Then think again.

Simply put, it is not necessarily how much you spend rather it is how wisely you spend what you have. Rich people usually became rich by spending wisely.
Hal actually, is restoringh some sensibilityy to the Yankee empire after years of living on the high hog. He has put out a needed market correction for Yankee Global Enterprises which is the LLC that controls the whole ball of wax that is comprised of many business enterprises, including the New York Yankees.

Good point. This was not a deep free agent class.

of course they're not done.... they have very slim pickings for catcher at this moment...

Pickings for catchers is slim all through MLB. There aren't enough to go around.

#@&&#^# the Yankees, or soem such thing. Or Hal and Brain do it in the road.

He's right. We need another bat or 2 (I'd say). If somehow the Fish would bite and accept A-Rod for Stanton with the Yanks paying all of A-Rod's salary that would be huge since Stanton is relatively cheap for the next few years.
