Avs' O'Reilly on the block (or staying in KHL)?

08:07 AM ET 01.11 | Of all the questions facing Avalanche coach Joe Sacco, the subject of Ryan O'Reilly ranks among the most important. Rumors have swirled that O'Reilly -- who led the Avs with 37 assists and 55 points last season, in addition to an NHL-high 101 takeaways -- might be traded or remain playing in Russia. He is the last Avs player unsigned by Colorado general manager Greg Sherman, and the Avs are more than $16 million under the 2012-13 salary cap of $70.2 million ($54 million payroll). The salary cap shrinks to $64.3 million next season -- still plenty of room for O'Reilly, who likely seeks $3.2 million to $4 million annually. O'Reilly's agent, Mark Guy, and the Avalanche were allowed to resume negotiations Tuesday.

Why would they trade him then? The article says he's on the block, then instead of giving reasons why he can't be signed, they give a bunch of reasons why there is almost no chance he isn't signed...

How does a team trade an unsigned player, anyway?

Restricted free agent. You're trading away his rights, then it's on the new team to sign him to a deal. There are a few key guys still unsigned - Subban, Del Zotto, O'Reilly, Kulikov, Benn...

It doesn't have to be a sign and trade?

Nope. You can just trade his rights and let the new team negotiate. It's what the Leafs did with Kessel, which as we all remember led to many years of glory and absolutely zero regret.

I think it is very unprofessional for SI to caption a photo "To***to Maple Laughs."

Everyone knows it is "To***to Maple Laffs."

you have to realise it's the Denver post saying to Av's management "what gives? why haven't you signed this guy yet?", that's how I saw it...

Ah well...

I have a hard time believing he's better at it than The Datsyuk.

O'Reilly I really like. But he is no more than one of the league's best 3rd line centres. If he is on your second line (which he isn't in Colorado nor should be on any team), then your team sucks.

I wouldn't pay a 3rd liner $4 million, no matter how much I like them.

He will be signed at some point. Players in a short season have more leverage.

This is what happens when one types when high.
