08:43 PM ET 01.11 | The BCS is a system that has been under intense criticism for the last five years, well, really since its inception, but the bulk of the hate has materialized and avalanched in recent years. It's been called a system of favorites, a flawed system, and a system that doesn't accurately reflect the best teams in the country. While BCS cronies starkly defend it as a money grubbing legitimate system of ranking college football teams, we've had yet another slip up when it comes to the BCS and its rankings. It's called the Colley Matrix and it's one of six computers that rank and make up the BCS standings. However, its final and official ranking of the 2012 season places Notre Dame as the No. 1 team in the country, despite being blown out in the championship game by the consensus No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide. The final rankings in the Colley Matrix had Notre Dame at No. 1 with a score of .973997, ahead of No. 2 Alabama, which came in at .961139. Every other system of ranking, both computer and human, ranked Alabama over Notre Dame because, ya know, they crushed them in a head-to-head matchup. But not the Colley Matrix.

Ja hey der, why is this site using KenoshaMarkie's baby picture's without his permission?

That's why there are more factors than the colley matrix in BCS rankings

January 11, 2013  11:32 PM ET

Shared BCS titles, just like pre-BCS. Thank goodness for BCS to clear things up.

January 11, 2013  11:37 PM ET

Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M, Oregon, Stanford....all better than Notre Dame. If the computer doesn't see that - reprogram the computer.

January 11, 2013  11:50 PM ET

need an 8 team playoff using the bowls. of course there will still be complaints from the 9th/10th.......... teams. or just scrap the whole thing and go back to the way it was (i still say nebraska would have beaten michigan in a heads up game. ahhh the good old days.).

January 11, 2013  11:57 PM ET

Aahh...and to think that earlier this year some blowhard over on the Message Boards sounded off about how the Colley Matrix was the only true ranking system.

16 teams seems more appropriate although they might not like making all that extra money

So, do they now give the trophy to ND? Stoopid systems, and the 4 team playoff will be no better, it will four teams picked by a computer that folks do not like now. Just fix the whole system by only inviting the top four SEC teams and let them playoff for the title, better outcome and more accurate.

I know you're just fishing, but sometimes I think you are in serious need of an adjustment to your meds. No computers used in the play-off. And none of you SEC homers could agree on the best 4 teams in the SEC.

What's Neo's take on this?

They said they will use a committee of people, and use info from computers in determining the best four.

I think the committee is going to use only a strength of schedule calculation with an eye on the out of conference schedule as well as the conference.

But, my memory went with my hair so this could be all wet.

If they do not use computers, where would you find four guys that none of them have an agenda and favorite team or hate of a team. Wait, got it, use only women. Not saying anything bad like they are not so smart or anything, most of them just could care less about sports and would not be likely to be swayed one way or another.

Every once in awhile you need to take a gander at the LUS thread, justsayin.

Exactly. Do the math - this is one of six computer models designed to come up with one third of the selection process. That's about a 5.6% impact.

It's as if two of the human voters voted against Bama, despite the game. Big story about nothing much on a slow sports day.
