10:33 AM ET 01.12 | Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops regrets the controversial remarks he made Friday about Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel on an Oklahoma City radio station. Stoops reached out through an OU athletics department spokesman late Friday to indicate he regretted his radio comments and has the "utmost respect for Texas A&M and Johnny Manziel." During an interview with WWLS radio personality Al Eschbach and co-host J.D. Runnels on Friday afternoon, Stoops spoke glowingly of the Heisman-winning Manziel. "I've seen a lot of football players play a lot of different styles with guys, but never seen anything like that in my whole life," Stoops said. "I mean, I've never felt as defenseless as we were the other night, that's for sure. But then Stoops cut loose a different kind of critique. "They're gonna be tough to deal with," he said. "If they can keep him out of jail or keep him eligible, he's gonna be pretty good." Eschbach started to laugh at this point, and Stoops chuckled, too. "If they can keep him off the Twitter, he might win three or four Heismans," Stoops continued. "He'll have that type of ability."

If he had just said, this guy made swiss-cheese out of my defense. I have no answers.

As Russell Cosby used to say, "NC -- No Class."

Yep-to hell with being politically correct-tell it like it is. The kid has had a brush with the law and like to party-not real unusual for kids that age-not a big deal.

Regrettable comments? Sure they are. Bet Sumlin handle it, Mike. If he can't keep the guy in line, then that's his problem and nobody else's.

January 12, 2013  01:28 PM ET

** But let Sumlin handle it

Mo coffee, please!!!

QUOTE(#15):

Huh? What did Stoops say that was so controversial? I'm reading them again and again and I found nothing offensive. It seems like you can't say anything anymore without insulting someone.

Reported.

(just kidding!)

Yep. College kid does something stupid. Stop the presses! What matters is what he learned from it.

Aggie here. ('87)
I don't think it was that controversial and no one should be offended, especially Aggies.
He was praising Manziel and was (sort of) joking around.
Frankly, it's something I've been thinking about in the back of my mind.
We all love Manziel and what he - and the Team/coaches, have done this year and we hope it continues. But let's be honest we've all done stupid things in college. Manziel is smart and will be advised along the way by Sumlin and the team to just be smart at all times!

Based on what I have heard and read about J. Football, appears to be good advise to me!!

He was just trying to be flippant and funny. In fact he was giving Johnny Football a bigger compliment by implying off the field issues will be the ONLY thing keeping that young man from a college hall of fame career. Man,I really hate the PC world we live in now. Bleep em if they can't take a joke.
