Canadiens send Scott Gomez home with buyout to come

11:55 AM ET 01.13 | Scott Gomez's time as a Montreal Canadiens forward is over. GM Marc Bergevin addressed media this morning to say they were sending Gomez home for the season for the express purpose of buying him out this summer. This is the safest route for teams to take with players they're looking to use one of their compliance buyouts on as injured players aren't allowed to be bought out. The downside is his $7.357 million cap hit sits on the books no matter what this season.

Hey Scott, remember when you were on NJ winning cups, a top line center who was producing. And you thought, I am putting up points here but could put up a ton more and get paid a lot more then Lou is offering. Hope the money was worth your career.

For them. But if he played well, he would be getting another big time contract, not a buy out and close to league minimum next time. So he got more up front, but might not be more in the long run. Or it might. Who knows.

I nearly drove off the road when I hea the announcement.

January 13, 2013  05:11 PM ET

btw, I'd laugh really hard if rickety plays most of the season and then lands himself on the i.r. right at the end, thus blocking the buy-out.
