We live in a narcissistic society. Celebrity status is more valued than actual accomplishment, therefore, the goal is to have everyone look at "me". If enough people are looking, it confirms "my" celebrity status.
I can at least write this with a clear conscience since I do not have a facebook page or twitter account. Except for my phone provided by work, I don't even have a cell phone.

I rarely go to FB, mainly to check on family pics being shared around (beats emailing them) so I just turn their status updates off. But it just is sooo ridiculous to feel the need to send out a message 17 times a day about what you are doing "right then and there". DS pretty much has it nailed.
