Big Ten considering new division names

04:23 PM ET 01.14 | Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany says the league is considering new division names for when Rutgers and Maryland join the conference in 2014. The current Leaders and Legends designations have not been well-received "Obviously we got some acceptance [with Legends and Leaders], but not as much as we would have liked," Delany said. That's putting things mildly. Those division names also led to some unintentionally amusing juxtaposition, as two football programs in the Leaders Division -- Ohio State and Penn State -- were ineligible for postseason play in 2012 thanks to NCAA sanctions. Leading the way in postseason bans is probably not what the Big Ten had in mind there.

Better idea: Get rid of the obsolete NCAA rule that says football championships must be played between division winners.

Then why have divisions?

I think it is conference rule? Not NCAA?

Precisely. Moot conundrum.

NCAA rule 17.9.5.2 (c) states "a conference championship game between division champions of a member conference of 12 or more institutions that is divided into two divisions (of six or more institutions each), each of which conducts round-robin, regular-season competition among the members of that division."

Yeah we could have the pollsters and the media pick the teams.

What the B1G needs to do (and probably will do) is add 2 more teams and divide into 4 divisions with a 4-team playoff to determine the conference champ. The B1G would play all 3 of these games at their sites and keep all the $$... not needing to share with a bowl or the BCS. That is the future of college football and when we have 4 conferences wioth 16 teams we will have in essence a 16 team playoff.

Novel idea... Include fan input on the selection of new division names. Have a competition for the new logo design.

Day late and a dollar short, my good river. If you've not read my previous posts about the dystopian future of Div. 1-A CFB, you've missed out on making that lunch unappetizing.
