08:09 AM ET 01.15 | How much freedom he'll have under the new administration remains to be seen, but Alex Ovechkin, for now, is happy to see a change on the bench -- and he was asked Monday whether he was happy with what he's done to this point of his career. "Of course everybody wants to get better and better. I'm happy what I did last year because it was a pretty hard year for me, starting with Bruce [Boudreau] and ending with Dale [Hunter]. I'm happy how I handled it. ... So I learned a lot last year. Of course, last year was not my role on the team. With more ice I can give more to the team. It was [Hunter's] decision and he had his own mind and his own kind of personality and his own systems. Of course sometimes I felt trapped."

He's a Federov who peaked earlier. I smell buyout, if not after this season, the next.

not that I have ever been an "everything or nothing" guy, but I think this team has seen its peak, and indeed...it may be time for him to go. Might i suggest a destination....

Trapped by Hunter???? Please, be thankful Dave Frost wasnt your coach.

He did handle the situation well, though.

Probably because nobody on his team would listen to him even if he did whine.

isn't he signed thru like 2020 or something? Anyone know what his cap hit is going to be on a buyout? I think it's more likely he's gone but not via the buyout.

He may have been whining, but who would be able to understand him?

He's signed thru 2021 and his annual cap hit is $9.5m. He is 110% amnesty candidate, but I think he'll get this season and next to prove himself.

Semin, but alas..

Tee. Hee. You can understand him a lot better than some of the other Ruskie (sp?) players out there!

If I didn't know better I'd think this was some kind of new fur-bearing animal.

Yeah that's a possibility Otis for sure....he'd be my pick on Washington... or maybe Green cuz he's injury prone

Exactly - they played better when he played less. Hard facts mean nothing in the face of selfishness.

it surprised me that he handled it as well as he did. Didn't whine or pout (not publicly at least). I thought it was a mistake to make him the captain because he's not a particularly disciplined, game-plan comes first type of guy. A little bit more of a free spirit. I like his personality on the ice and his obvious enthusiasm. I like him, always have. It'll be interesting whether or not Oates can get him producing at a higher level again with a slightly different system. I wouldn't bet against him.
