High school coach: Lane Kiffin's recruiting tactics "shady"

11:16 PM ET 01.15 | Lane Kiffin destroyed the football program at Tennessee in one season by pretty much being a loud-mouthed idiot but moved on to USC before he himself had to pay a penalty. It was this very act that drew the line in the sand when it came to people pro-Kiffin and anti-Kiffin. But while some just say Tennessee fans are lashing out due to a notable hometown bias, one high school coach took to Twitter to say Kiffin's still a sleazeball when it comes to recruiting players. Kyle Fitts committed to USC back in April 2012 and planned on enrolling at USC this month with the idea that he'd begin college in the spring. On Jan. 5 at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, Fitts met with coaches from USC, who said they were looking forward to having him play for them this upcoming season. But on Jan. 7, Fitts was told by USC that they won't have a roster spot available for him in the spring and that his scholarship had been pushed back to the fall semester. Not only would Fitts not be playing for the Trojans, he'd have to wait even longer to begin his college education.

Fitts scholly wasn't pulled. It was pushed back to the fall. If it was pulled, then this coach would have an argument. Because of the numbers game, it had to be pushed back. Lane is not shady in this particular situation.

kiffin knew the "numbers" when he offered the kid. the kid was also was given the impression he would be an early enrollee at usc which must have enticed him only to have it taken away at the last minute. so something "sleazy" did occur, it would seem.

Didn't we see this story a few threads ago?

Lane is Layla's genetic material donor (fine looking kids). Let that be the starting point for your expectations, and use the perspective to process stories such as the one atop this thread.

exactly. Kiffin took him off the market. And after Kiffin pulled his bait and switch, it was too late for the kid to go elsewhere and get the early enroll/play in the fall scenario that enticed him to commit to USC. shady, sleazy and dishonest.

You are correct...in this case Lane is not shady.
He's SLEAZY in this case.

While I think Mr. Kiffin is a scuzzbucket, this isn't unusual. The numbers game does that.
What I think is most upsetting to the kid (and thus his HS coach) is this means he likely won't be playing in the fall, since he won't be participating in spring practice.

Come to UTk kid. There your hatred of Kiffin will not only be accepted, but encouraged.

+1.
There's no direct crime here, but the promises to the kid were not upheld, and there are consequences to the player that would have likely otherwise played a part in his decision to possibly go elsewhere to meet his goals. Kid has a beef, and the bottom line is LK is the HC and it had to have been his (or USC asst coach/recruiter's) decisions all along this process.

There has to be some kind of statute of limitations on Vol vitriol against LK.
Or maybe not.

Well there has been a resurgence because of how inept Dooley was. And many attribute the hiring of lowly Dools to the position that LK put Tenn in.
So there you have it.

Don't get me wrong, with the garbage he threw at Corch Meyer while he was on Rocky Top, I am not complaining about whatever treatment LK may get from the Vols.

I'm not too familiar with the term "Grayshirting", maybe someone can help me with this, but isn't this the same thing that Saban does at Bama???

A "grayshirt" is where a recruit was offered a scholly, but because "the numbers don't work," the recruit does not get his scholly. Instead, the recruit attends classes (at his own expense). The scholly is then offerred/accepted afterwards, and doesn't count toward current years numbers. I'm pretty sure this is correct, but you may want Joe Kidd to explain it better.

Thanks for the info, but didn't USC offer "Kyle Fitts" a Scholly??? USC didn't pull Fitts' scholly, did they??? Can't Fitts still enter USC and go to class and work out until fall practice??? I'm confused!!!

He can attend class, but he has to pay his own way until fall. If I was him, I would take some JC classes to get ahead on the academic side.
For you guys talking about promises made by coaches during recruiting??? That's an absolute joke of an argument. How many coaches spin their BS trying to get a kid to commit with 25 spots??? Damn near everyone of them. Try recruiting with 15.
Stay home Kylie. You are still wanted here.
