Will the Ravens just franchise Flacco?

07:50 AM ET 01.16 | His agent sparked the conversation about "elite" status again recently, but this much is undeniable: Joe Flacco is playing some of the best football of his pro career. With Flacco's contract expiring in March, how much money did he just make? And how much more does he stand to make with a defeat of New England? "Zero," said one AFC team's cap specialist, "and I'll tell you why: We're getting to the point where the Ravens are only going to 'franchise' him. All this does is ensure that they're going to put the franchise tag on him, which translates to no more money and doesn't change the equation of the deal." Now there's an answer I didn't expect. But the guy has a point.

He's worth it!!!

A long term deal could reduce his cap number. It's interesting that the Ravens might be thinking short term. I guess either Flacco wants to break the bank, or they still don't quite trust him.

Of course they will franchise him. It's not like they have an alternative.

Franchise him... then work on a long term deal.

Joe Flacco deserves a HUGE guarenteed contract.
-signed, Joe Flacco

I trust the Ravens organization so eventually they will sign him long term. I'm just scared to lose Ellerbe and Kruger.

Flacco has made it hard on me at time, but I've been telling people that in here for years.

Man - Paul Kruger is a bad ****.

You're right to be concerned about losing him.

As hard as it is top pick against Little Bill and Tom Brady...

I have a hunch.

No more money? Really? Flacco is making $6.8 million this year. That's less than any of the top 5 quarterbacks. It will cost over $16 million to franchise a QB.

Bill just doesn't lose twice in one season to same team but I'm very optimistic the Ravens might get the W.

The Pats are in sync and healthy. The defense has gotten its act together. The spread is 9. They may not cover, but they will win.

I'll take your word for it DD... but I'm staying away from all bookies this weekend.

When you hear a number like $16mil and then remember that it is all guaranteed, you have to wonder what's so bad about the franchise tag.

If the spread is 9 the Ravens are probably a good bet

I asked Anthony Armstrong this, and he said "If tagged, and we get hurt, we get nothing the following year."
