Steelers unlikely to use franchise tag

07:40 PM ET 01.16 | The Pittsburgh Steelers are unlikely to use the franchise tag this offseason. Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert hinted at the news today during a press conference when he was very critical of the team's roster. "I don't think we have too many franchise players," Colbert said. "We're not married to anybody." Colbert's comments are good news for wide receiver Mike Wallace, who will likely become one of the most highly sought-after free agents if he hits the open market. After Pittsburgh committed big money to fellow wide receiver Antonio Brown, it is unlikely that they will open the checkbooks for Wallace. Wallace is a bit of a one-trick pony, but it is one trick that he excels at and it is something that every offense in the NFL could use. The 26-year-old wide receiver is among the best deep threats in the league. While the Steelers would like to keep Wallace on the roster, he hasn't proven to be worth the headaches or big money that he demands.

So sad but yep I think it's time for Mike to try his luck elsewhere, probably Rashard too.

Ben already complains about their dink and dunk offense. He'll love losing Wallace.

Maybe but at the end of the day business is business, Ben's a big boy now and he understands that. Mike should have taken the deal he was offered last year. Seeing how he played this year, I don't think free agency is going to be quite what he was hoping for

I agree! I think the Steelers will let him test free agency. Sadly somebody will overpay speedy receivers.

Good receivers or not, Big Ben will always scare defenses.

Thing is that Mike wasn't the best receiver on the team, fact is that he dropped a lot of balls this year.

And said that he quits giving full effort when he's not getting the ball.

I don't think the offense will miss him at all!

I'd like to see Wallace in Indy. They've got $ room and a pretty good QB.

Don't waste your money!

He'll be a 49er by the time Free Agency starts...
