08:05 AM ET 01.17 | What's next for former Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith? [If Smith] fails to land a head-coaching job elsewhere, he's prepared to sit out the 2013 season because he's not interested in any of the coordinator jobs, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Smith interviewed for head-coaching jobs in Philadelphia, San Diego and Buffalo, but each of those teams selected other candidates. The only other two coaching vacancies are in Arizona and Jacksonville. An NFL source recently said that Smith's name hadn't come up during any discussions for the opening with the Jaguars. Fired by the Bears on Dec. 31 after a 10-6 season, Smith was set to receive a reported salary of $5 million in 2013, which will be paid to him if he sits out the upcoming season.

Being that there is, what, one job available and he can get $5 million for doing nothing, he should be prepared.

Lovie's solution for the Bears offense was to bring in guys like Mike Martz and Mike Tice. If GMs want bland and outdated philosophies for their offense, then those are the type of coaches to bring in. All the HC hires so far have been OC's or offense-first coaches. Lovie's philosophy is clearly not what GMs are looking for, and they probably aren't going to be much fonder about it a year from now.

Lovie can get a job as a Rooney Rule candidate. He'd only have to "work" a few days a year in every offseason. All his payments would be under the table so tax free. Pretty good gig.

"Lovie is prepared to sit out the 2013 season".... And.... Seriously though, no one really wants to hire a head coach who is fully capable at staring at a stadium video board all game long, and blowing his time-outs in the first 2 minutes of a game. Come on, someone could really benefit by this type of coaching expertise.
