05:25 PM ET 01.17 | It's no secret that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has played with more than his share of injuries over the years. But after another season that saw Roethlisberger miss games (three full ones, to be exact), leading to the Steelers missing the postseason this year, Pittsburgh appears ready to at least consider the future in this year's upcoming NFL Draft. According to a report from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (via NFL.com on Thursday), Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said the team will have no reservations about drafting a quarterback with their 17th overall pick in the first round, should the right fit be on the board.

They've needed a 'good' back-up for a few seasons. Batch is usable...but not overly noteworthy.......

Probably a good idea. If you were able to get Matt Barkley in the second round, for example, why would that not be a good idea?

QBs drafted in the first round are expected to start not be backups. I think Colbert is just blowing smoke about the Steelers' true first round targets!

Played out his rookies contract and left as a FA. He was on Baltimore's practice squad for most of last season.

It is about time. Replace Ben, Antonio Brown, Dwyer and Tomlin. I am tired of watching Ben lose games and take sacks for 100 million dollars. That money could be better spent. And since Tomlin insists on playing him and players like Brown, hell or high water, Tomlin can go to.

There's nothing to these statements. The Steelers approach every draft the same way, they make a list of the players they feel are the most talented and the most suitable for the organization, they grade them according to their fit, and they take the top name left on the list when their pick comes up.
Of course they will look at quarterbacks. They will evaluate every position. The difference is that, in previous years, the confidence they had in the backups at QB pushed their grades way down.
I'm glad Colbert's talking about letting most of the FAs walk, though. Big Snack and Keenan Lewis are the only two that really seem essential.

That's a pretty harsh way of looking at it. The team made significant efforts to improve the line last offseason. Injuries just made their efforts fruitless.
Big Ben and Brown suffered because Mike Wallace sat out the preseason, missing key snaps at practice, then got shoehorned into the offense at the last minute. That meant that all the assumptions made about him during their time learning the playbook had to be worked out in realtime during the games.
And Big Ben was on his way to the Pro Bowl before he got hurt. Even still he threw the second fewest INTs of his career. Just sucks that half of them were after his injury and three of them ended games. He needs some time to heal up and he'll be fine for a while yet.
Dwyer is the best RB on the team. He's the only one we should keep. We should give him the starting job and let him settle into a rhythm. He has the ability, and if we can keep an OL together long enough for them to all settle it, it should smooth things out quite a bit.
And getting rid of Tomlin is just ridiculous. This is just the second time he's missed the playoffs. He's never had a losing season. Do you know how many fans would kill for their team to suffer that level of "failure"?
The problem is you're just spoiled rotten. And have no idea how good we've got it as Steelers fans right now. Don't worry, no team is on top forever. And then you can find a new team to hitch your bandwagon to. Maybe finally give the home team a chance. I hear Matty Ice is halfway decent.

I think Snack is done as a Steeler. They have 3 NTs on the roster and McClenden is ready start. Plus Snack seemed to drop off a little this year in his level of play.
Losing Lewis will force the Steelers to look for a CB early in the draft. Although S should be a top priority. I wouldn't mind seeing Foster brought back at the right price b/c he can play OG and OT.
