Alex Smith joining Norv in Cleveland?

08:01 AM ET 01.18 | Norv Turner traded San Diego for Cleveland and a head coaching job for an offensive coordinator position. The 60-year-old could've spent 2013 playing golf while receiving $3 million in salary from the Chargers. What did Norv do? He opted to move to Cleveland, where, as playcaller for the Browns, his job will hinge on Brandon Weeden's quarterbacking. ... It'll be his first go as an offensive coordinator since 2006, when he fortified Alex Smith for the 49ers. At least Weeden is further along than Smith, who in '05 was a wreck: one TD pass, 11 picks and a 50.9-percent completion rate. With the 49ers likely to part with Smith in a few months, I wouldn't be stunned to see the San Diegan join the Browns. Hey, it worked for Brian Sipe.

The Browns hold the 6th worst record. Their draft picks will be worth something. Alex Smith will go for high value, and San Francisco will slowly grow into a dynasty.

Why not just develop Weeden or Mccoy? They are cheaper than Smith's $24 mil contract.

49ers don't need or want Smith, and everyone knows that. Nevertheless, Smith's value will be overstated.
Not worth it for the Browns. Keep rolling with Weeden.

Rookie Brandon Weeden is a year older than veteran Alex Smith.

Which makes it unlikely that they will get much for him. His play before Harbaugh showed up isn't going to help either.

Someone help me...
I thought Alex Smith was a FA after this season.

No, he just finished the first year of his 3-year deal.

It was three year deal. $24 million total. The 49ers can opt out for around a million if they release him before a certain date, April1 I believe. If he is on their roster after that date they owe him about $8 million all guaranteed.
If you think he is legit, then $8 mil a year in 2013 and 2014 is a fair deal for a QB. But! anyone who thinks he is worth the browns 6th pick in this draft is over estimating his value I think.

I think there is a good chance they will try to. Turner and Chud have been almost like QB whisperers, heck Chudzinski got Derek Anderson to a Pro Bowl... think about that, Derek Anderson, Pro Bowl. QBs have also looked pretty good for Turner when he has been an OC.

I remember now...
And - like 50 said - if the Browns were stupid enough to give up the #6 pick in the draft then the new regime looks a whole lot like the old regime.

Technically, he was the first alternate for the Pro Bowl. He got to go because Brady opted out.

I'll take Smith over both Weeden and McCoy. Just look at his body of work compared to the other two guys. Smith wasn't the reason the 49ers didn't go to the SB last year, he was the reason they were so close!
But I would also be happy to see what Norv and Chud can do with Weeden and McCoy because up to this point they haven't been working with the caliber of talent that is coming in!
Only time will tell but as a life long Browns fan, we have suffered enough and just want to see our team make the playoffs and give us fans hope for the future!

Hate to break it to you all but nobody is going to trade for Alex Smith.. He is going to be cut then scooped up by another team for a much cheaper price... come back to reality folks...

The 49ers may just want to hang on to him. These next few years look good for them, but you are only as good as your backup QB when/if number one goes down. colin K is not expensive, they can keep them both.

Perhaps, but he just may have more trade value before the deadline next year to a team that loses its QB or is not happy with what they have in August. I do not think they just cut him.

You don't get it... No GM in their right mind would ever trade for him. They would just wait it out knowing that the Niners will cut him. The Niners will in no way shape or form keep a backup making that kind of money on their roster and the whole league knows that so why trade for a guy and take on his huge contract when you can just wait for him to be cut in April right before he is due his bonus and get him for alot cheaper? Think about it...
