Minority candidates shut out from coaching carousel

08:02 AM ET 01.18 | The Cardinals have invited Bruce Arians to try to right the ship in Arizona. That means out of the eight head coaching hires, none was a candidate of color. None. Not one. 0-fer-black. In effect, what NFL owners and general managers of those teams said was this: No minority candidate was good enough to hire for one-quarter of the head coaching jobs in the NFL. This is a topic that evokes great emotion and conversation from many in and out of the sport -- sometimes that conversation is civilized, sometimes it's ugly and bigoted. I can tell you there is great outrage among the black assistant coaches I spoke to on Thursday night. I mean, extreme anger. ... Things have definitely gotten better. No question, but this 0-fer shows how far we have to go.

Maybe they just weren't the best candidates.

January 18, 2013  08:16 AM ET

Not every coach-of-color is Tony Dungy.

January 18, 2013  08:24 AM ET

And besides that, there isn't one lesbian coaching in the NFL. What's with that?

January 18, 2013  08:40 AM ET

It must be those racist white owners

January 18, 2013  08:53 AM ET

They actually went negative with the firing of Romeo and Lovie.

January 18, 2013  09:05 AM ET

So what?

January 18, 2013  09:10 AM ET

You know something, that never crossed my mind.

I guess only a bigot would notice something like that.

So someone I guess was supposed to hire Hue Jackson? What, after he set back Oakland with his bad trade for Carson Palmer?

January 18, 2013  09:27 AM ET

For every Tony Dungy there is a Dennis Green. For every Bill Belichick there is a Rex Ryan. There are good and bad coaches across racial lines. And owners are not inherently racist; rather they are conservative and tend to go with coaches that have a proven record. Owners seem to be willing to take big chances on players but not on coaches. That creates a Catch-22 for assistant coaches trying to make the jump to HC - they don't have the record as a head coach so they can't get hired as a head coach.

Well it's the ones calling racism everywhere that are the most racist, they are the ones basing everything off race and see race in everything.

Maybe it was an 0-fer coaching positions, cause *gasp* maybe there where no minority candidates worthy of the jobs, could it be? Noooooooo.

If Kelly is officially classified as a midget, then does this argument still exist? Are they not a minority too?

January 18, 2013  09:41 AM ET

I love how the race card always come up.

Yes, but they're a small minority.

Good morning good people!

When are we ever going to understand that maybe... just maybe... the best black candidate just wasn't as good as the 9 guys ahead of him. I don't see any Chinese coaches, yet you never hear complaints about that.

Of course, you don't see any Chinese players, either. Black players are abundant.

Hence the attention to the disparity on the player side versus the coaching side.

You also don't see any midgets playing football... but that doesn't mean a midget wouldn't make a great coach.

Coaching and playing = no relation to a candidates qualifications and his size or color.

a sussinct post from a poster on that cbssports site:

aggie16 5pts14 minutes agoBy the way, Lovie Smith could have been a DC for any of these teams. Ray Horton will land a job as a DC somewhere. Mel Tucker will land a job as a DC somewhere. Raheem Morris landed a job with the Redskins after being fired. Romeo Crennel has landed on his feet a few times after being fired and was even given a second chance as coach of the Chiefs. Hue Jackson ended up coaching in Cincy after being fired and could have had a few jobs as an OC that he turned down to stay in Cincy. Mike Singletary is asst HC/LB coach in Minnesota. Am I missing anyone here? These are the most recent examples I can think of that prove "Fight the Man" Freeman wrong.
