Rodgers: Read-option merely a fad

08:02 AM ET 01.18 | The read-option approach may be all the rage in a few NFL cities. But Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has some running skills, is not at all interested in operating an offense that uses a read option. "I think the league is cyclical," Rodgers said on his radio show. "Things have come back around that have been used 20, 30 years ago. But this too, I think, will pass. Some of the pistol, read-option stuff will eventually pass. Now it might not be for 10 more years. The athletic quarterback, I don't think, is going to pass at all. You have seen the trend with more and more guys who can make plays when the pocket breaks down, who can extend plays, who are also good passers. You will continue to see that."

1. Draft an athletic running quarterback.
2. Base your offense on read-option.
3. Get picked to go all the way by mid-season.
4. Wait for the season-ending injury.
5. Pack your golf clubs for a January vacation.

And whatever happened to the Wildcat?

Couldn't agree more. Defenses will always figure it out that's why I'm highly critical of the Skin's success next season if RGIII comes back.

It would be great if at the end of his career he gets replaced by a read-option quarterback.

For the sake of your defense, Aaron - you had better hope so.

DCs adjust too. Schemes, personnel and the like. It still comes down to can an offense block well enough to make a theory work and can a defense tackle well enough to stop you.

Most QBs that the NFL will be choosing from will come a read-option, they are already hiring coaches that know how to use this ??? just look at the 49ers, Redskins, Seahawks and you can see alittle bit of it with the Pats to some extent and you'll see it with the Eagles.

These new read-option QBs are exciting and fun to watch. But, Aaron is absolutely right. Remember the hype when Vick got to the nfl? All the rage was his type would force all the pocket passers out of the game. But injuries will be the ultimate equalizer for these read-option guys. That, and like 50 said, DC's will adjust. Same with the wildcat.
Out of the 4 QBs still left in playoffs, 3 of them are pocket passers. and the one read-option guy was lucky enough to play a team that was completely and utterly overwhelmed defending the read-option. I remember when the Dolphins debuted the Wildcat, and completely and utterly embarassed the Patriots. I do not recall the Pats ever losing to a wildcat team since, and in fact, detroyed Miami their next meeting, with like ~39 net wildcat yards that game.
