08:23 AM ET 01.18 | How long it lasts remains to be seen, but the Wild are giving 2012 first-round draft pick Matt Dumba his dream shot. When the Wild brought [Dumba] to their abbreviated training camp, the 18-year-old figured he wouldn't be staying in Minnesota much longer than a week. ... Now it appears he will be the biggest surprise on the team's opening night roster. The Wild made a handful of moves Thursday, Jan. 17, that effectively set their roster in advance of their season opener Saturday. Dumba was left standing as one of the seven defensemen, and coach Mike Yeo said "you should expect that" the seventh overall pick will be with the team when it faces the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.

He's got talent that's obvious. will it translate to immediate success? stranger things have happened, **** luck to him, and I do hope he holds on, and makes a contribution.

how is typing "good" a swear word? are you serious?

maybe the mods have the same last name as the object of the story...only a different vowel at the end

he's gonna get his 5 games, like a ton of other kids, and then we'll see where we're at. I doubt he stays beyond that.

I don't why, but when I see his name that 'Roomba' commercial keeps running through my head.

Yep. Flyers are doing the same thing with an 18 year old they have hopes for. I don't know if 5 games is enough to make a judgement, but with Briere likely out for a few games, it's a perfect opportunity to see what he can do.

Completely agree Foil, it's alot to ask any 18 year old kid, and one who plays defense none the less, to not only understand the position, but thrive in it. I like this 5 game, test the waters if you will rule for these kids though. May not be a good lithmus test or sample of how they can truly play, but it gives them something to strive for once they report back to the minors.

18 year olds go back to Jr's Nacho but yes I think it's a smart move to let them sit at the big people's table for a bit let them get a taste of what to expect and to find what parts of their game they have to improve to stay longer next time

If Dumba can become as good a defenseman as the HOFer was to his left the Wild have got themselves one heck of a player.

January 18, 2013  02:16 PM ET

Only time will tell if it's a Smart Move... Or just plain Dumba :-)
