09:02 AM ET 01.19 | The Chicago Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks recently discussed the feasibility of a trade that would have sent right fielder Justin Upton to the Cubs, according to two major league sources. According to both sources, the Diamondbacks asked for two-time All-Star Starlin Castro in return for Upton. The Cubs, trying to build a solid base of young players in their somewhat depleted system, balked at trading a 22-year-old shortstop for a 25-year-old right fielder and cut off talks.

the d'backs were about to land top prospect pitchers from the mariners except that Justin refuse to play for seattle,if it wasn't for that refusal the arizona team should had been celebrating top prospects in their roster!!!

January 19, 2013  11:49 AM ET

perhaps the nationals would like to add a tough hitter into their roster but how much would it take??

January 19, 2013  11:50 AM ET

one solo player from the cubs was worthless. the d'backs were just lucky enough to keep Justin upton in their lineup!!!

Dude, why are you spam posting - aside from the obvious reason of wanting to pad your comments total???

January 19, 2013  02:23 PM ET

Castro is, and will be, a much better player than Upton ever will be!!! Dbacks came in just a shade below ridiculous with that offer lmao

January 19, 2013  04:26 PM ET

The DBacks now have back themselves into a corner with Upton, because if you don't get something for him before he becomes a free agent, you will be let with nothing after he walks.

I bet Theo and Jed were hoping to trade Soriano for Upton. That dream had about as much chance of happening as Manti T'eo getting Lennay Kekua pregnant, or the Cubbies winning the World Series in 2013!

Really, the D Backs are about to the point where Upton is going to be moved. Seattle had a nice offer, but Upton **** Arizona and refused the deal. I keep waiting for San Fran, Philly, and Atlanta to make a move on this guy.

I don't think he'd fit in with the Giants......even though they need a good bat

LMAO, mental illness I'm sure. Can't actually formulate a coherent thought. Not to mention he never adds a thing to a thread. Other than that he's great!

January 20, 2013  09:06 AM ET

And back to the actual article, the Cubs would be **** to trade Castro for this guy. They need to add players, not subtract. So if you can add Upton without giving up your core...fine, otherwise pass. Sure Upton might have upside and be coming into his prime, but Castro certainly is and has only begun to touch his potential. They need to get his head screwed on straight.

I'm sure they asked for Rizzo and prospects too and that's not going to happen either. Rizzo is completely untouchable.

Ja hey der, you got a little T'eo thing going on yourself. You imagine yourself dating Theo or Jed or Alfonso or Santo. How was the Cubbies convention? Did you get any numbers? Hahahaha!
