New Browns GM has been critical of Brandon Weeden

09:32 AM ET 01.19 | If Michael Lombardi wondered whether anyone in the Browns' organization had paid attention to his work at the NFL Network the past five years he got his answer quickly Friday morning. Moments after news broke that Lombardi had been hired as the team's vice president of player personnel, rookie receiver Josh Gordon tweeted: "Uh oh. Am I in trouble?" Gordon, once labeled a "waste" of a supplemental draft choice by Lombardi, was only one of the analysts' targets in recent years. Even before the 53-year-old former league network commentator took a seat on stage Friday for his introductory news conference, local radio stations were playing sound bites of critical comments Lombardi had made about the organization, its draft choices and quarterback Brandon Weeden. He had called the drafting of the 29-year-old quarterback with the No. 22 overall pick a year ago, a "panicked disaster," even as he admitted Friday of having no memory of making that statement. Lombardi has said the Browns would have been better served conducting a competition instead of anointing Weeden the starter. On Friday, Lombardi said he must watch practice film of Weeden before drawing his final conclusions. "I think it's going to take some time to study him," he said.

Browns wasted most of those high draft picks last year, trading a pick to move up and draft a RB that would have been theirs even without trading the pick, and drafting Weeden next ... both of these decisions were made while top O line and TE talent was on the board. Fix the line first then the QB.
New Browns GM has a right to be critical.

And He is not related to Green Bay Packers coaching legend Vince Lombardi, who had a better memory. You think a guy whose been, as an NFL executive, with the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, St. Louis Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, and Oakland Raiders, would know when to hold 'em (keep mouth shut)

While I agree that trading up for T-Rich wasn't a smart move, the Browns didn't want to take a RT with a high pick because they had Schwartz rated higher than those available. He turned out to be one of the best, if not the best pick they had last year. He started all 16 games at RT and played VERY well for a rook.

That's the thing about the draft... sometimes you just go get the best player and screw the "draft for need" thing.
I'd say it worked out for you.

The Browns didn't hire a GM, they hired a VP of player personnel which is a completely different position. He is part of the selection process but doesn't have final say on the roster.
As for the hire I guess only time will tell? I can't hold what Lombardi did in his past with the Browns against him because in all honesty he made a lot of smart moves when last in Cleveland. He knew Bernie was well past his prime and was instrumental in his release. As it turns out he was right because Bernie didn't have a good season after he left. When you look at what he and Bill B did together they put together a pretty damn good roster with what little time they had.
I only question the fact that he has been out of the league for 5 years but again, only time will tell and I will hold all judgement until I see what he and the rest of the staff can do.
