Roberto Luongo on Canucks bench until Panthers sweeten pot?

09:12 AM ET 01.20 | Roberto Luongo will have to sit and wait. The Canucks goaltender wasn't on the move Saturday night as the NHL season opened. Instead, he was on the club's bench at Rogers Arena in Vancouver getting a first-hand look at the opener against the Anaheim Ducks. Not many expected Luongo to still be with the Canucks once the shortened season began, but you've got to give GM Mike Gillis credit for being patient in trying to drive up the price for the veteran goalie and not just giving him away. While Cory Schneider is the starter for the Canucks, he's one bad game or untimely goal away from giving way to Luongo. If that doesn't happen, then sooner or later somebody will be desperate enough to give Gillis what he wants. The Florida Panthers have shown interest -- and, ultimately, that's where Luongo wants to end up when this drama ends -- but sources say GM Dale Tallon is going to have to sweeten the pot a lot more if that's going to happen.

Luongo's going to stay put until Schneider proves himself as a steady keeper.

The Canucks may pull the plug on the deal since Schneider gave up 5 goals last night and was pull.

Yeah, if you're letting the likes of the Leafs beat you on home ice, opening night, you got some serious troubles.
Burkie deserved the ripping. Fun to watch!

It looked like what it was, a game after a long layoff, without a pre-season, and with both teams featuring players that didn't play abroad. It was slow & sloppy, I wouldn't put much stock into anything that happened last night, other than the fact that both these teams will end up in the bottom.
I caught Philly-Pitt, that game had a ton more speed, skill and emotion. We'll see what the other games look like.

That wasn't pretty. Another outing like that and there will be a third team interested in Luongo.

I'll say Kadri's goal was flukey, and honestly Price played phenomenal. But Montreal never looked like even wanting to win that game. Both teams blew some pretty solid chances, but Toronto had more of them, and the Leafs D (Kostka in particular) made it look easy.
Also, there was a smug satisfaction hearing the Bell Centre go so quiet :)
