Report: Russell Wilson asked Seahawks for new contract

07:23 PM ET 01.20 | There is no secret that Russell Wilson had one of the best rookie seasons in NFL history. He didn't shatter records, but he lead the Seahawks to the NFC Divisional Playoffs and almost singlehandedly revived Pete Carroll's career in Seattle. But while his rookie season is over, Wilson is still fighting for something he wants - a new contract. However, there's a few things wrong with that, the main thing being Wilson legally can't ask for a new contract under the new CBA, which is something he's reportedly already done. Right now, Wilson is locked into a three-year rookie contract, which was structured under the new CBA. After the NFL lockout, one of the major changes made was how much rookies are paid. Salaries had become so massively inflated in the last 10 years, that teams had to seriously discuss whether or not they should hold on to their top pick because they weren't sure they could afford to sign the player they drafted.

So they sign him to a contract that starts in his 4th season with a nice little signing bonus

A contract is a contract, but WTF Wilson earned a deserving bonus in my book.

History has shown that paying someone huge $$ after 1 good season has close to a 100% failure rate. Hypothetically if they were to give him 1 (even though they can't) and he goes through a HORRIBLE sophmore slump would he return the $$ or take a paycut next year? Doubt it.

Sounds like his agent doesn't really understand the mechanics of the current CBA.

Find a way to pay the guy....he deserves it. He's a top ten QB already and going to get better.

LOL!!! and so it starts... I doubt he gets his contract this season... GM's are very unlikely to cater to one hit wonders these days....

umm,....i'd tell wilson to just **** !,.......there's other rookies/2nd yr.-players out-performing their contracts too [jj-watt ?!]...!

Not to this level...but also Watt was a 1st rd pick so hes gettin 1st round money. Dude is a STARTING QB who won games as a 3rd rd pick...cant tell me he's not being underpaid. Look at how much Matt Flynn got this year and didnt even play.

The End of a Love Story!!!

Look at how much Matt Flynn got this year and didnt even play.

I think that Wilson also looked at Flynn's salary.

absolutely ridiculous article....way to spin this around on the reports **** wipe...he didn't ask, nor was he aware of anyone asking for him. I guarantee russell could care less about his contract right now. He's one of the few pure souls in the game.

January 21, 2013  01:25 PM ET

He's in a similar situation as Kaepernick, played much better and much sooner than expected. All he has to do is keep performing at a top-level and stay healthy until he can be rewarded. Which is no easy feat in the NFL.

Just echoing Landry360 here. It's looking like Wilson knew nothing about this. One of his reps decided to be proactive without understanding the rules. Wilson seems to be the kind of guy that would play for whatever they'd give him. The big contract will come at the end of the 2014 season, and unless he gets hurt before then it's going to be a lot of moolah.

Sounds like his agent doesn't really understand the mechanics of the current CBA.

That would not surprise me.
