Bill Belichick says he's not retiring

08:43 PM ET 01.21 | Bill Belichick was called out by Shannon Sharpe last night for blowing off a post-game interview with CBS. When he spoke to the media today, Belichick went out of his way to let everyone know he will be back next year as the head coach of the Patriots. No one asked him, or even thought his job was in any sort of jeopardy but Belichick let us know anyway. It may have been his way of apologizing to the media for being such a salty guy, the way your dad never actually says anything really mushy to you but the feeling of love is shown through an awkward silence and a shoulder pat. That's really the way Belichick has been with the media ever since he became a head coach in the '90s with the Browns. However after his little "moment" with the media, it was back to business for the coach, who said the Patriots are already thinking about next year.

So the man who never answers the questions that are asked now answers one that was not asked. There's a fine irony in there someplace.

He's smart enough to ride that cart till the wheels fall off, mainly until Brady retires.
Although if he says it, it must be true. After all he did use his press conference with the Jets introducing him as their new head coach to announce he would be the Patriots head coach.

If he retired now, he would get to go to the HOF the same year as Ray Lewis.

Is that justice or is that injustice?

Well that is the next debate isn't it? Should Brady retire and/or should the Pats be looking for a replacement? No offense to Tom but he and Peyton have now entered the twilight zone for SB winners. Only Elway and Unitas won the big dance at age 37, In all truthfulness Unitas was injured in the 1st half of SBV and Earl Morall finished that awful game. So do the Broncos and Pats keep believing that their guy can beat the clock? Glad it's not my decision to make.

I suppose it very much depends on your point of view.

Yes, after all it is only a concept

For now yes. Both Manning and Brady play in perfect divisions to give them several more chances at getting to post season play. But the influx of of QBs that can throw and run some sort of option is picking up speed. Wouldn't mind seeing what Johnny Football and Marcus Mariota can do on the next level.

I think the yes has as much to do with financial commitment as it does with the belief that one of the glitter twins has a shot at joining Elway in "the oldest ever" club. Fact is both still pack in the fans and that is what it's all about.

Like pretty well every evolution of the offensive the next season brings the evolution of the defense as DC's and their staffs get beady little eyes watching miles of film dissecting the new craze. The zone read option is just a sophisticated variation of the wishbone, in how the play is started (misdirection) getting the QB into a bootleg where the reading of the defense is rudimentary as they are basically only having to read half the field. By the time Manziel and Mariota get to the pros the defenses will have caught up to the offenses forcing the offenses to add new wrinkles and then eventually new systems (again just variations of some other long forgotten offense like the chuck and duck)

And after a few high priced QB's go down with injuries. The upper management types will remember why there is a pocket in football. It's to protect their quarterbacks

Everything that goes around comes around. The wildcat is basically the single wing formation of the 40s

Or they will accept that qbs are not going to last as long as they used to.
